Edmund Spenser 작품에 나타난 통합적 사랑관

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 Edmund Spenser(1552-1599)의 작품을 당시 시대적 상황 속에서 고찰해보는 것이다. Spenser가 다루었던 여러 가지 주제 중에서 사랑이라는 주제가 Spenser가 살았던 당시 Elizabeth 시대의 정치·사회적 분위기와 그에 따른 문학적 태도를 잘 반영하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 Spenser의 작품 중 사랑의 주제가 두드러지게 나타나며 아울러 Spenser 작품들 중 대표작이라 할 수 있는 The Faerie Queene Ⅲ(1590), Amoretti(1595)와 Epithalamion(1595)을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이들 작품속에서 Spenser가 당시 정치·사회적으로 요구되었던 사랑관과 Protestant 시인으로서 지닌 사랑관이라는 서로 불일치되는 태도를 어떻게 훌륭히 통합시키면서 당시의 시대적 요청에 충실히 부응하고 있는지 살펴보았다. 서론에서는 Spenser가 생존했던 Elizabeth 시대 혹은 영국 르네상스시기의 정치적·사회적 문학적 분위기를 살펴보았다. 이 시기의 영국은 나라 안과 밖에 모두 정치적·종교적 적대자들이 존재하였던 시기로 불안정하였다. 이런 어려운 시기를 헤쳐나가기 위해서는 영국민을 하나로 뭉치게 할 지배이념이 요구되었다. 그래서 정치·사회·문화의 중심을 Elizabeth 여왕으로 삼아 여왕을 중심으로 단결하고자 하는 태도가 나타났다. 이런 지배 이념을 국가주의, 영국주의로 표현할 수 있는데 여왕은 이런 이념의 상징이 되었다. 시인들 역시 당시의 시대적 분위기에 호응하여 여왕을 찬양함으로써 지배이념을 강화시키는 역할을 수행하였다. 따라서 Spenser가 Elizabeth 시대의 사회·정치적 지배이념을 문학을 통해 충실히 반영한 것은 예외적인 태도라고 보기 어렵다. 당시 위대한 문인 중 한 사람인 Sir Philip Sidney(1554-1586)의 A Defence of Poetry(1595)에 나타난 교훈적이고 효용적인 문학관을 통해서도 당시 문학적 분위기를 짐작할 수 있다. 따라서 Spenser의 사랑관 역시 이러한 시대적 분위기와 따로 떼어서 이해하기는 어렵다고 할 수 있다. 당시의 시대적 분위기와 연관지어 살펴볼 때 Spenser의 사랑에 대한 태도에서 나타난 두드러지게 나타난 양상은 virginity와 married love의 찬양으로 요약된다. 본론에서는 virginity 와 married love를 각기 다른 장에서 나누어 살펴보면서 Spenser가 서로 일치되지 않는 사랑관을 어떻게 통합시킬 수 있었는 지 시대상황에 비추어 고찰해 보았다. 본론 첫째장에서는 virginity 찬양을 중세 즉 Catholicism 그리고 궁정식 사랑양식과 연관지어 이해하였다. 당시 영국의 virgin 여왕을 찬양하는 것이 일반적으로 받아들여지는 문학적 분위기 속에서 Spenser가 독신의 상태를 결혼보다 우월한 것으로 여긴 중세종교관과 연인들의 관계에 있어서 일방적·종속적이며 태도에 있어서 숭배에 가까운 양상을 띠는 궁정식 사랑양식을 받아들인 것은 자연스러운 현상이었다. 그러나 Protestant 시인으로서 결혼에 대해 긍정적 태도를 지닌 Spenser에게 있어 진정한 사랑이란 출산, 후손의 생산, 그로 인해 인류의 중속성을 유지해 주는 married love라고 볼 수 있다. 둘째장에서는 Spenser가 married love의 찬양을 통해서 virginity 찬양 속에서 나타난 한계성 즉, 왕위 계승을 통한 왕권의 안정, 더 나아가 Tudor 왕조의 찬양이라는 시대적 요청을 훌륭히 반영시키고 있음을 살펴보았다. Spenser에게 나타난 이런 사랑관은 중세적 전통과의 연속성과 특이성을 모두 수용하면서 사랑에 있어서의 육체성과 효용성을 동시에 강조하는 Spenser의 가치관을 반영해 준다. 그리고 이런 Spenser의 통합적 가치관을 고찰해 봄으로써 인간과 인생을 총체적으로 파악하고자 한 르네상스의 통합·융합 정신이 Spenser의 작품에서 잘 구현되고 있음을 알 수 있다.;This thesis attempts to illuminate the works of Edmund Spenser(1552-1595) in historical context Among many subjects regarded by Spenser it can be said that love is one of the most conspicuous subject that reflects political, social, and cultural condition. In this thesis Spenser's view of love is explored mainly in The Faerie Queene Ⅲ (1590), Amoretti and Epithalamion(1595) where love episode is conspicuously described. Through these works this thesis seeks to examine the view of love that unified incompatible aspects : virginity and married love in historical context. In the introduction, political, social, and literary atmosphere of Elizabethan Age or English Renaissance period is explored. It is generally agreed that this period is characterized by disintegration and instability because political and religious enemies existed inside and outside of England. In order to overcome this difficult situation a dominant ideology was required for uniting a whole Englishman. This ideology can be expressed as Nationalism and Englishism and these ideologies were developed into imperialism and expansionism. In this period especially court poets played a role in justifying these ideologies. Spenser was a willing participant in this effort. When Spenser's view of love is explored in this sociopolitical and literary condition the prominent aspects in Spenser's attitude towards love can be condensed into the praise of virginity and married love. The first section of the main body of this thesis is the discussion of the praise of virginity in the light of sociopolitical condition. To commend a virgin queen, Elizabeth Ⅰ as a symbol of nationalism and Englishism Spenser idealizes the celibacy and the surbordinate love relationship derived from medieval tradition : Catholicism and courtly love convention in Amoretti and Belphoebe episode in The Faerie Queene Ⅲ. The second section of the main body is a study of Spenser's admiration of married love which has. relation with Protestant tradition. By means of commending married love which results in pregnany and productivity Spenser reflects Englishman's an ardent wish, the perpetuity of nation in Amoret and Britomart episode in The Faerie Queene Ⅲ and Amoretti and Epithalamion. Therefore it can be concluded that Spenser's view of love combines the continuity and particularity of medieval tradition and utility and sexuality.
