포스트모던 디자인의 이해와 실험적 적용방법에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 1960년대 부터 전개되기 시작한 포스트 모던 디자인의 이론과 작품을 비교, 분석함으로써 디자인에 나타나는 포스트 모더니즘의 조형 개념과 구성원리를 규명하고 그것을 우리의 역사와 전통에 근거한 디자인으로 적용하는 방법을 연구하는것을 기본목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 건축과 실내공간 그리고 그 공간을 구성하는 사물 이렇게 세 부분을 연구대상의 영역으로 선정하여 포스트 모던 디자인의 현황을 분석하고 그것의 문제점이 무엇인가를 인식하여 우리나라의 문화와 환경에 적합한 적용방법을 기억이미지 전환에 의한 공간 디자인을 중심으로 하여 실험적으로 제안하였다. 그리하여 우리의 우월성과 독창성을 재인식하는 기회로 삼고 서구 문화, 또는 서구사조의 단면적 수용이라는 문화적 사대주의의 오명에서 벗어나 보다 능동적으로 문화를 개척해 나간다는 논지하에 다음과 같은 방법과 과정으로 연구를 진행하였다. 1. 포스트 모더니즘의 개괄적 이해를 위하여 사회 경제적 요인, 인간적 요인 그리고 디자인적 요인으로 분류하여 포스트 모더니즘의 발생 배경에 대하여 알아보고, 또한 이론적 고찰을 위하여 포스트 모더니즘과 관련되는 이론 즉 커뮤니케이션 이론, 디자인 수사학, 기억이미지, 그리고 문화행태론에 관하여 포괄적으로 연구하였다. 2. 문학, 회화, 조각, 건축, 제품, 실내환경 디자인 등 예술전반에 걸쳐 광범위하게 논의 되고 있는 포스트 모더니즘의 일반적 특성에 대하여 고찰하여 포스트 모더니즘의 정의를 포괄적으로 내리고 디자인에 있어서의 조형개념과 구체적 표현방법인 구성원리에 대해서 선행 연구물을 통하여 분석하였다. 포스트 모더니즘의 조형개념을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 역사적 인유(Historical Allusion) 2) 은유와 상징(Metaphor and Symbolism) 3) 장식성 (Ornamentation) 4) 이중코오드화(Dual coding) 5) 복합성과 대립성(Complexity and Contradiction) 6) 맥락주의(Contextualism) 7) 절충주의(Eclecticism) 3. 대표전인 포스트 모던 디자인을 선정하여 앞서 설명한 조형개념을 중심으로 구성과 표현방법에 대하여 분석한다. 그리고 포스트 모더니즘을 우리의 것으로 적용하는데 있어서 발생하는 문제점을 파악하여 다음 과정에서 디자인 해결방안의 근거로 삼았다. 4. 결론부분 즉 이미지 전환에 의한 공간 디자인을 중심으로 포스트 모더니즘을 하는 과정은 다음 네 단계로 구성된다. 1) MEMORY IMAGE - 역사적 기억의 이미지들을 종합하는 과정. 2) VISUAL ELEMENTS - 기억의 이미지에서 나타나는 시각적 형태요소를 추출하는 과정. 3) VARIATIONS - 앞서 추출된 형태요소를 변형, 왜곡, 발전시켜 새롭고 독립적인 형태를 창조하는 과정. 4) CONCEPTUAL MODEL - 여러가지 대안들을 평면적 또는 입체적으로 구성하여 공간의 이미지로 변형시키는 과정 본 연구의 결과로서 나타나는 포스트 모더니즘의 실험적 적용방법의 한계와 가능성을 예상하면 다음과 같다. 포스트 모더니즘의 형태표현에 대한 관심과 시도는 기능과 구조의 논리적 해결차원을 넘어서 인간의 감수성을 고양시켜주는 미적차원에의 중요성을 상기 시키고 있다는 점에서는 상당한 가치를 지니고 있다. 본 논문에서 가장 중요한 조형개념으로 다루었던 역사성의 추구 또한 긍정적인 측면으로 받아 들일 수 있고 이와 같은 요소들의 탈 근대 디자인에 적용하는 데에는 상당한 설득력을 갖고 있다고 할 수 있으나 그러한 요소들을 어떠한 방법으로 적용하는가에 대한 문제는 본 논문의 해결과정에서 무척 어려운 문제로 대두될 것이다. 즉, 역사적 모티브를 인용하는데 있어서 기와지붕, 박공, 한복의 선등과 같이 외형적 장식에 치우쳐서 우리의 생활에 내재하는 내부질서의 문제를 정확히 파악하지 못하고 시각적 의미만을 중요시하지 않는가에 대한 문제이다. 따라서 진정한 포스트 모더니즘이 성숙되려면 우선 기본 조형개념들의 올바른 이해가 선행되어야 할 것이고 근대 디자인의 유산인 창조적 공간구성, 구조방식등을 흡수해야 할 것이다. 끝으로 시각적 형태 요소의 표현이라는 Hardware적 측면 뿐만 아니라 우리 역사와 사회, 지역에서 찾을 수 있는 내적의미의 문제도 고려한다면 문화와 역사를 고려한 진정한 포스트 모던 디자인이 탄생할 수도 있을 것이나 본 연구는 그러한 시도의 첫 단계로서 형태적 요소의 다양한 해석과 구성방법으로 포스트 모더니즘의 새로운 방향을 모색한다는데 그 의의를 둔다.;This thesis treats as a basic object a right understanding of the Post-Modernism by clarifying formative concepts and principles of the Post-Modernism and by studying methods of application as the basic design in our history and tradition which the Post-Modern work commonly have with comparing and analyzing the Post-Modern theories and works that artists have started since 1960's For this object, I choose three parts as the study fields, the architecture, the interior space and the objects which form the space. I propose experimentally the suitable applying way of the Post-Modernism for our country's culture and environment, concentrating on the, space design by the conversion of memory image. Therefore, I reconfirm the superiority and creativity of our culture and emphasize on the more active and opening-up of the culture, casting off the defamation of cultural flunkeyism, such as the fragmentary reception of the Western culture or the Western spirit. On the basis of these thoughts, I develop my study in the ways and procedures as follows: 1. For the general understanding of the Postmodernism, I examine on the occurrence backround of the Postmodernism by classifying the social economical factors, the human values and the design factors. In addition to this understanding, I generally examine the theories related to the Postmodernism which are the Communication Thoery, the Design Rhetoric, the Memory Image and the Cultural Behavioralism for the theoretic understanding. 2. I examine the general characteristics of the Postmodernism that people argue in every field of art, such as literature, pictures, sculpture, architecture, products and interior designs, etc. By this investigation, I give a general definition to the Postmodernism and then analyze the formative concepts and the constituent principles which are the concrete ways of expressing design by studying the precedent study work. The summary of the formative concepts in the Post-modernism is as follows: (1) the Historical Allusion (2) the Metaphor and the Symbolism (3) the Ornamentation (4) the Dual Coding (5) the Complexity and the Contradiction (6) the Contextualism (7) the Eclecticism 3. In the third stage of my study, I select a representative Postmodern design and analyze which occur when we apply the Postmodernism to our fields of arts, so that the solutions of design in the next stage can be based upon them. 4. In the results, there are 4 stages as procedures of applying the Postmodernism focusing on the spatial design by the conversion of memory image. (1) the Memory Image the procedure of synthesizing the historical images. (2) the Visual Elements : the procedure of abstracting the visual formative elements which appear in the memory image. (3) the Variation : the procedure of creating a new and independent form by transforming, distorting and developing the abstracted formative elements. (4) the Model Making : the procedure of transforming various proposals into a spatial image by two or three dimensionalizing. As results of this study, I expect that there appear some limits and probabilities in experimental application of the Postmodern Design as follows: The interests and trials of the formative expressions of the Postmodern Design have much value because they remind people the importance of the Aesthetic. The historical allusion that I treat as the most important formative concept in this thesis is also an affirmative aspect and it is very persuasive to apply these factors to the ex-modern design. However in the solution process of this thesis it appears a very difficult problem in applying these factors. In other words, in applying the historical motives, the problem is that we devote ourselves only to the visual meanings without right understanding of the problems of inner order which exist in our lives, concentrating only on the external ornaments, for example, a tile roof, a gable or lines of Korean costumes. Therefore, we must understand correctly the basic formative concept first, and then absorb the creative composition of the space and the ways of formation which the modern design has left, inorder to mature the true Postmodern Design. Finally, if we consider not only the hardware aspect, but also the inner problems which we can find in our history, society and regions, we can construct the true Postmodern Design which includes culture and hi story. However this study, as the first stage in those attempts, has ar emphasis on the search of a new direction of the Postmodern Design through various interpretations of the formative factors and ways of formation.
