Abstract

Edward Bond(1934- )는 2차 대전 이후 영국 극작가 중 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있으며, 동시에 많은 비평가들의 논쟁의 대상이 되어 왔다. 그는 현대 사회에서 우리가 당면하고 있는 문제들을 사회주의 관점으로 다루는 사회주의 극작가에 속하나 그가 사용하는 강렬한 이미지와 충격적인 수법은 매우 독특하다. Bond는 현대 산업 기술 사회에서 야기되는 비인간화와 폭력이 미치는 영향, 개인의 소외를 주제로 다루면서 사회의 내적인 모순들을 폭넓고 진실되게 그리고 있다. 그는 예술의 사회적인 기능을 강조한다. 그에게 있어서 글을 쓴다는 것은 당대 현실의 반영일 뿐만 아니라 그 현실에 대한 사회적인 해석이며, 나아가 진리를 발견하여 합리적인 사회를 이룩하는 도덕적인 행위이다. 그러므로 그의 예술은 계급없는 이상사회를 향한 사회의 변화를 다루게 된다. 그리고 예술가는 신화와 폭력이 지배하는 사회의 허위를 꿰뚫어 진실을 드러냄으로써 사람들로 하여금 그들이 처한 사회의 조건과 문제들을 이해하고 인식하도록 도와 주어야 한다. 그리고 나아가 이러한 인식을 사회를 변화시키기 위한 적극적인 행동으로 옮길 수 있도록 해야 한다. Bond는 예술가에게도 이러한 행동을 요구한다. 예술가는 사회구성원의 한 사람으로서 사회와 독립하여 존재할 수 없으며 진정한 문화를 만들어 가는 사회 구조의 일부로 기능해야 하는 것이다. 초기극에서 사회가 당면하고 있는 주요 문제로서 violence의 양상을 다룬 Bond는 중기극인 Bingo, The Fool, The Woman에서는 과거의 역사와 문화적 전통을 새로운 시각으로 재조명함으로써 현대 사회의 문제를 객관화시켜 보여준다. 특히 Bingo와 The Fool에서는 과거의 두 예술가를 주인공으로 현대 사회에서의 작가의 역할과 책임이라는 문제를 제시한다. Bond는 사회 변화를 위한 예술의 기능과 공동의 사회 복지를 향한 인간 행동에 대한 긍정적인 믿음을 가지고 그의 예술을 통해 이에 대한 해답을 추구하고자 한다. 본고에서는 예술과 실제 삶의 분리, 예술가와 사회의 갈등, 그리고 자아 인식과 예술가의 실패를 중심으로 Bingo와 The Fool에 나타난 예술가의 딜레마를 살펴 보고자 한다.;Edward Bond(1934 - ) is one of the most prominent and controversial among the new British dramatists, since World War Ⅱ. He writes about the problems of modern society from a socialist point of view, but his use of powerful image and shocking dramatic device is very distinctive. He interpreter inner contradictions of society honestly and fully, dealing with themes of dehumanization, the effects of violence and alienation of the individual caused by capitalism and technology. He emphasizes the social function of art. For him literature is the interpretation of human life in its fullest, social sense as well as the reflection of contemporary society. Writing is the moral act discovering the truth and accomplishing a rational society. Therefore art is about the change of society towards a classless society. The artist should cut through the myths and the falsehood that we are made to believe, reveal the truth about society and help people understand and recognize the conditions under which we live. People are also required to act their recognitions into reality for the change of society. Bond also asks artists to act positively in society. The artist cannot exist independent of society because he is a man among men. He must be a functional part of the social structure for a true culture. Bond, who dealt with aspects of violence, as a social problems in his early plays, shows the problems of our society objectively in his middle plays (Bingo, The Fool, The Woman) by reinterpreting the history of the past and cultural heritages in a new light. Especially, in Bingo and The Fool, he chooses two artistic figures of the past as protagonists, and presents responsibilities and roles of artists in contemporary society. Bond expresses an optimistic view of the function of art for the change of society and human action for a common good and tries to obtain a solution through his art. In this essay, I will try to show what Bond intended to present as the dilemma of artists in Bingo and The Fool by analysing the separation of art and life, the conflicts between the artist and society, their self-recognition and failure.
