Abstract
This study is to examine closely the substances of the writer's recognition of Japan in Hoi-you-rok(海遊錄), one of the records of the ninth visit, written by Shin You-han and Shown an aspect of Choso^n dynasty. First, in foreword of this study the diplomatic relation with Japan formed through Choso^n dynasty is outlined and on the basis of it the contents and his writing attitude is considered. Therefore, the purpose century, is made clear. The East-Asia(東亞細亞) formed the Eate-Asian World order(東亞細亞國際秩序) with China as the centural fugure. Especially in the international relations the diplomatic policy was the worship of the powerful(事大交隣) and the relation with Choso^n and Japan also had a good-neighbor policy to each other. In the recent times, Im-Jin-Woi-Ran(壬辰倭亂) brought about a large reform in the East-Asia. In Chinathe change of regime from Ming(明) to Ch'ing(淸) was brought and in Japan Tokugawa Iyeyasu(德川家康) took power since Toyotomi Hideyoshi died. In Choson the whole country got in ruin, caused the social unrest in the inner, and the national power was on the dedine. In Manchuria the Yo-jin tribe(Kum) rose threateningly. At this time, Tokugawa Iyeyasu(德川家康) was forstering a new atmosphere and he hoped to have the new relation with Choso^n. In this way, both Choso^n and Japan needed to reopen their negotiation by the trend of the times, and their conference let the missions visit the other country all the twelve times from King So^n-jo(宣祖 40, 1607) to King Sun-jo(純祖 11, 1811). It meant that in Choso^n the missions could look for Japanese affairs and enhance their culture to Japan that was proud of 'the little China(小中華)' by the national isolation policy. On the other hand, in Japan the power of the safe Tokugawa-bakufu(德川家康幕府) displayed at home and abroad, and was a golden opportunity to control many dia-myo(大名), In the late Choso^n dynasty, Tong-shin-sa(通信使) was dispatched with the object of celebrating the Japanese general's Succession(將軍襲職) and consoling all the generals. But its activities was stronger as a cultural mission than as a political-diplomatic. As we know very well, Shin You-han was the nineth Tong-shin-sa-je-sul-guan(通信使製述官) to celebrate Tokugawa Yoshimune(德川吉宗)'s succession. Though he was a stepson, he was recommended as a document administrator with his literary ability and wrote Hoi-you-rok(海遊錄). It showed realistically the social conditions in Cho-so^n and Japan in the 18th century. Therefore, not only his recognition of Japan, bur also the change of the intellectuals' recognition and Japanese recognition of Cho-so^n could be examined. Especially, his recognition of Japan is different from the former's China-centered view(華夷觀). At that time, the current of the times was reflection of a fransitional inclination. Because in the aspect of culture the self-esteem as the traditional confucian was very strong, he had the contemptous attitude of Japanese culture. But he was interested in a social-economic development as well as the understanding of a political system. Though his thoughts didn't come up to the recognition of the social structure or its principle, those were all very new options. And they were shown the change of the intellectuals' recognition of Japan.
