Middlemarch의 Dorothea Brooke의 결혼에 나타난 여성론적 의의

Abstract

George Eliot은 작품속에서 나타난 그녀 자신의 여성론적 견해의 애매함으로 인해 불확실한 여성론자라는 평가를 받아오고 있다. Eliot에 대한 그러한 평가는 Eliot이, 자신이 실제 삶에 행했던 것을 그녀의 여주인공들에게는 허용치 않은 때문이다. 이러한 반응들은 Middlemarch에 대한 일반적인 여성비평에서도 살펴볼 수 있다. 그러나 80년대로 들어서면서 나타난 최근의 여성비평들은 이전의 비평에서와는 달리 Middlemarch에 대한 긍정적인 평가를 시도하고 있다. Middlemarch의 여성론적 작품으로서의 실패 여부는 자연스럽게 Dorothea Brooke이라는 여성 인물에 맞추어진다. Dorothea는 사회가 부여하는 제한된 역할과 한계에서 벗어나 세상에 유용한 일을 하고 위대한 삶을 살기를 희망하는 여성이다. Eliot은 사회적으로 제한된 여성의 역할을 넘어 성취를 위한 배출구를 발견하고자 하나 실패하는, 서사적 삶을 희망하는 여성들의 운명을 그리고 있다. 이 논문의 본론 첫장과 둘째장은 Dorothea의 일을 향한 추구와 첫번째 결혼으로 이어지는 과정을 Lydgate라는 인물과 비교해 본다. 그럼으로써 여성에게 부여된 제한된 교육과 기회에 대해 그리고 빅토리아 시대의 이상적 결혼에 대한 작가의 비판적 시각을 가늠해 본다. 마지막 장에서는 Dorothea의 두번째 결혼을 긍정적으로 살펴본다. 우선 Eliot을 거부하는 여성론자들이 자유의 개념을 분리된 여성의 자아성취로 규정하는데 반해 Eliot은 남성과 여성을 모두 아우르는 양성론적인 글쓰기 태도를 보여준다. 비록 Eliot이 여성으로서 당시 여성들의 한계를 완전히 이해했음에도 남성과 여성 모두에게 그녀의 동정은 분노를 초월하고 있다. 또한 Eliot는 Dorothea의 Will과의 역할을 통해서 'unhistoric acts'의 중요성을 보여주고 'Many Theresa'를 축복하고 있는 것이다. 즉 Dorothea는 전통적인 수동성을 거부하고 Lydgate와 Rosamond를 구하는 적극적인 행동과 의지를 행하는 인물이다. 그리고 Dorothea의 마지막 운명에서 반드시 고려해야 할 것은 공인된 Will의 정치적 개혁을 향한 일과의 연관이다. 즉 Dorothea가 아내로서의 도움을 주고 있고 그 개혁이 결국 통과되고 있음을 주목하는 것이 중요하다. 그리고 마지막 화자의 슬픔은 Dorothea에게 공인의 자리가 없는 것에 대한 불만에서 기인하는 것으로 해석한다.;George Eliot occupies a uneasy position among feminist literary critics. Many feminist critics express their resentments because Eliot did not permit her heroines to do what Eliot did in her real life. These reactions echoed in recent feminist criticism of Middlemarch. The arguments that Middlemarch fails as a feminist work are about the figure of Dorothea Brooke. Dorothea aspires towards a life beyond the provincial confines and wishes to be of use in the world. Eliot describes female fate of desiring an epic life but finding no outlet for achievement apart from the socially limiting role of 'common womanhood'. In this thesis, first and second chapter examine this female fate by tracing Dorothea's vocational pursuit and her first marriage comparing with Lydgate's. In this parallels and contrasts, Eliot explores the limitations of education and opportunity imposed upon female characters and presents implicit critique of the gentlewoman's life and Victorian ideal of marriage, The final chapter tries to approach the second marriage of Dorothea with the optimistic view. Many critics object to this second marriage. They wish literature to provide better models for women. But those who reject Eliot have defined liberation for women in literature in terms of intellectual and economic independence, in other words separate self-fulfillment. But the liberation ought to include all women and men. Though Eliot understand perfectly the limitation placed on women, her pity for both men and women in their suffering transcends anger. In portrayal of Dorothea's role in Will's life, Eliot makes a claim for the importance of "unhistoric acts" Eliot celebrate the "many Theresas". Dorothea rejects the passivity of leisure for active life of living through another. Dorothea redeems Lydgate's debt and his marriage to Rosamond. And another estimation of Dorothea's final lot should take account Will's work toward political reform. Because she gives him wifely help in it. And the narrator's sorrow at the end comes from the absence of her heroine's public vocation. We see how the constraints of Middlemarch frustrate a woman's impulse toward vocation, turning her toward marriage. We also see how a man's failure is derived indirectly from the common view of the women in Victorian age. And Middlemarch affirms the possibility of "far-resonant action". We still have something to learn from Middlemarch.
