Abstract
On the assumption that the literature is the revealing concern about man and their lives, the latter which are the general subject of the literature are to be maintained and exist under time, and the essential condition defining the former is time, time surfaces as one of the most critical matters in the literature. Since it is the most fundamental and essential condition for a man's living, the question of who I am is very closely, and substantially, related with time. Again, since time has a meaning to the existence, it can not but becoming a very important matter for Chai, In-hun who reduces the literature to the proposition that his literature is the exploration of the self identity. Therefore, looking into his literature subjects, the exploration of the self identity in terms of the aspect of time in his novels would allow us to clarify the essence of his literature. According to N. Berjaev, human beings are living in three kinds of times; the cosmic time, the historical time, and the existential time. Here, the cosmic time may mean the circulatory time, the historical time does the linear time, and the existential time does the vertical time which has a tendency of being submerged into the inner world of men. The second chapter of the study looks into the time structures appeared in <Keumho-Shinhwa> and <Kuumong> written by Chai, In-hun in accordance with these three types of times. His time in his novels shows to be a subjective and psychological one as it deals with the characters' consciousness. Seemingly, as it means the denial to the objective time structure whose validity is officially accepted in our lives and the principle by which Chai, In-hun forms his literature subjects, the exploration of the self identity, he chooses the depth where all of the times connected with existence penetrate reciprocally and converge as a whole rather than the length of the linear time. The submergence into the vertical depth is associated with the existential time referred by Berjaev. And, many narrative formation elements which constitue his literature come to exist in the special time principle of the existential time that they show special functions and roles. The dual juxtaposition of characters, the breakdown of logical connections among events, and the spatial symbolism corresponding to time are the characheristics gained by the formation principle of the existential time. As a result, it can be confirmed that time in his works is not only the principle generating the internal meaning of the novel itself but also a general frame taking part in even its subject. By the way, Chai, In-hun's another original characheristic of time-conciousness may be found out when realizing that the titles of his <Keumho-Shinhwa> and <Kuumong> are the same as those of the ancient novels. So, the 3rd chapter suggests the analysis of big works comparing to the counterparts of the old times. The findings of the analysis tell that Chai, In-hun's <Keumho-Shinhwa> and <Kuumong> have the same time structures as the counterparts of the old times and that he seems to try to accept the circulatory vision of the cosmic time viewpoint in the latter by employing the time structures of the old novels today. In other words, he introduces what were in old times to his novel, establishes the continuity of the self where the old and present times are connected each other organically, projects the cosmec-time consciousness including the vision of resurrection on his own novel, and thus further reinforces his ground of the establishment of self identity. As stated above, the time shown in <Keumho-Shinhwa> and <Kuumong> written by Chai, In-hun functions very importantly to set a sort of frame for the organization and the techniques of his novels and, as a general formation principle controlling the whole work, to have the novel not irrelevent to any detail part of the work.;문학이 인간과 삶에 대한 관심의 드러냄이며 문학의 대상이 되는 삶은 시간 아래서 영위되고 존속되며 인간을 규정짓는 본질적인 조건이 시간이라는 점을 감안할 때, 문학에서 시간은 매우 중요한 문제로 대두된다.
