John Donne의 종교시에 나타난 극적 요소

Abstract

시인의 임무가 혼돈되고 단편적인 경험들을 조화된 전체로 융합시키는 것이라고 한다면, 기독교의 상징을 통해 복잡한 영혼을 순수한 영혼으로 통합시키는 것을 목적으로 하는 종교시는 "특별하게 조화와 통합을 이룬 시" 또는 "이중으로 통합된 시"라고 말할 수 있다. John Donne의 종교시에는 자신의 자유로운 기질과 종교적인 의지사이의 갈등과 투쟁의 모습이 생생하게 반영되어 있다. 따라서 신에 대한 찬미나 숭배의 감정을 기쁨에 넘쳐 단순한 진실로 표현하거나 추상화시킨 당시의 종교시와는 달리 Donne은 구체적으로 자신의 종교적 체험을 형상화한다. Donne의 종교시를 훌륭한 시적 경지로 형상화시킨 그 기술상의 창조성은 무엇보다도 극적인 특질에서 드러난다. 극적인 특질은 당시의 종교시인들과 구분할 수 있는 중요한 특질이며, Donne의 복잡하고 모순이 많은 내면의 체험을 압축시켜 통일된 전체로서 표현할 수 있는 문학적인 양식이다. Donne의 종교시의 극적 요소는 극적 상황, 극적 등장인물 그리고 극적 구조 등의 세범주로 분류할 수 있다. Donne은 언어의 탁월한 구사, 시각적인 이미지 그리고 충격적인 비유법 등으로 생동감있는 특정한 장면을 창조한다. 그런 다음, 이러한 주어진 장면을 토대로 화자와 그의 말에 귀를 기울이는 무언의 등장인물과의 상호작용을 통하여 시인은 그의 내면의 심리상태를 표출한다. 그리고 화자의 내면의 심리적 발전상태와 깊은 관련을 맺고 갈등에서 화해로 움직이는 하나의 통일된 극적 구조를 형성한다. 이러한 극적 요소이외에도 Donne의 종교시는 역설, 기지, pun, 변증법적 인식태도, 자연스런 회화체의 언어 등의 개성적인 요소가 가미된 독창적인 종교시이다. Donne은 연애시와 마찬가지로 그의 종교시에서도 시의 새로운 경지를 개척하는 한편 17C 종교시인들에게 선구자적인 역할을 담당하였다는 점에서도 중요한 의의를 지닌다.;John Donne's divine poems have a quality which easily distinguishes them from other religious poems of his contemporaries. That quality is the dramatic quality which gives Donne's divine poems a vital and fresh impression. With his rich dramatic imagination, Donne creates an artistic form of poetry from his intensified religious experience, that is, from the quarrel with himself. Moreover, it is the dramatic quality, in my view, that keeps John Donne's divine poems away from being spoilt into "self-righteous sentimentality or theological cliche´" or "the special and limited awareness" and places them on a highly artistic level. In this dissertation, I have analyzed Holy Sonnets, "Good-friday 1613. Riding Westward" and "Hymns," attempting to find the dramatic elements by which Donne expressed his main ideas about death and redemption. The dramatic elements in his divine poems can be divided into three kinds of categories: The dramatic situation, the dramatic personae and the dramatic structure. Donne creates, at first, the particular situation such as the death-bed scene, last Judgement scene and the crucifixion scene which are visualized now and here. Then, Donne creates the dramatic character who is struggling in his dual and complicated nature. The psychological process of the dramatic character develops the tension caused by the dual nature into the final reconciliation. This psychological process is itself a poem, which creates an interior drama. Lastly, the dramatic structure is created by character's dramatic reversion from his inner. conflict through the action of meditation to a reconciliation. As partly seen in the examination of three dramatic elements, there are presented the lively images which vivify the present situation of the poems, the language of paradox and wit which creates dramatic tension, and the effective choice of diction which creates the dramatic power of the poems.
