셰익스피어의 Troilus and Cressida 연구

Abstract

This thesis examines Shakespeare's attitude to the problems of his age as it appeares in Troilus and Cressida. Renaissance was a transitional era which contains contradictory and disparate ideas. In this play Shakespeare revaluates various Renaissance thought. In this study I examined Shakespeare's view of his own society through inconsistent characters. Characters neither control nor transcend the impasse of reality expressed in the world of the play. Rather they internalize the contradictions of society. In result, their identities are shown to be insecurely dependent upon the social reality which confronts them. In the first chapter I have examined the playwright's critical attitude toward Troilus and Cressida. The second chapter focuses on Trojans and Greeks. Through this investigation about war and love, I have found Shakespeare treated feudal chivalry and courtly love as decadent and anachronistic. At the same time Shakespeare rejects Machiavellian absolutism and commercialism. Shakespeare shows the reality of disorder at its height in this play and presents no optimistic alternative. So I have concluded that Shakespeare's view of his age is not optimistic. In Troilus and Cressida Shakespeare presents a dark view of his age, criticizing both the declining values and ascending values.;본 논문은 Troilus and Cressida 에서 드러난 동시대에 대한 셰익스피어의 비판적 태도를 살핀다. 셰익스피어가 살던 르네상스는 복잡다양한 변화의 시기였고, 많은 분야에서 끊임없는 가치의 재평가와 전도가 이루어졌다. Troilus and Cressida 는 이런 셰익스피어 동시대의 제반가치들에 대한 재평가가 행해지는 장이다. 본 논문은 Troilus and Cressida에서 동시대적 상황을 안은 등장인물들을 통해 셰익스피어 당대의 변화하는 사회를 고찰한다. 극의 등장인물들은 극현실을 타개하거나 극복하지 못한다. 오히려 극은 현실을 내재화한 인물들을 보여준다. 그 결과 인물들의 정체성은 그들이 대면하는 사회현실에 불안정하게 의존하고 있다. 본 연구의 첫부분에서는 Troilus와 Cressida의 사랑에 대해, 두번째 부분에서는 그리스와 트로이간의 전쟁을 중심으로 셰익스피어의 태도를 살핀다. 등장인물들이 펼쳐 보이는 전쟁과 사랑을 통해 봉건적 기사도와 긍정적 사랑과 같은 과거의 전통은 시대착오적이고 퇴폐적인 것으로 드러난다. 동시에 셰익스피어는 새로운 시대의 가치인 상업주의나 마키아벨리식의 정치 절대주의 또한 비판하고 있다. 고찰의 결과, 본 논문은 셰익스피어의 동시대에 대한 견해가 그리 낙관적이지 못한 것으로 결론을 내린다. Troilus and Cressida에서 셰익스피어는 현존하는 과거의 가치와 부상하는 시대의 가치를 다 함께 비판함으로써 그의 시대에 대한 어두운 전망을 드러내고 있다.
