Abstract
A library catalog is the most Important key to a library collection. This key should be so designed as to enable users to handle it with ease and convenience. Library catalog use study is necessary in order to identify the demands made on the catalog by its actual users and to measure the adequacy with which the catalog is meeting these demand. Many major catalog use surveys were performed by means of questionaire and interview, but these methods are so difficult and perverse that the results of catalog use studies might often be far from scientific precision. There have been many large-scale catalog use studies in Western countries to prepare a sound ana faultless catalog, but such studies have never been initiated in Korea. The aim of this paper is to seek the guidelines with which one might assist the catalogers in providing an effective library catalog for their patrons. In order to get the first- hand information an actual survey was undertaken on searching behavior at the catalog of Ehwa Womans University Library from October 11 to October 28, 1980. The results of the survey can be summarized as follows: 1. Most of the library patrons (94.17 %) use the public catalog as the key to the library collection. 2. 62.76 % of the catalog users are interested in searching materials written in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. Therefore it is necessary to insert subject headings on the catalog cards for those materials and to prepare subject index at the classified catalog. 3. 83.09% of the catalog users are interested in searching known items (specific items) at the catalog. It represents the catalog's preference as a means of a finding tool. 4. In known item searching, 57.08% of the catalog users choose title entry : therefore many title added entries are of special importance at the catalog. Access should be provided not only by the title taken as a whole but by each word of the title taken seperately. 5. For the translated items users want double entries in both vernacular and Korean. 6. The users can make use of neither the classified catalog nor the subject headings on the catalog cards. It represents the catalog is not much utilized in subject searching. 7. The entry for a translator must be revived. Author's date of birth and death, illustrative matters and size of book can be deleted without imparing the usefulness of the catalog. 8. 64.72% of the catalog users need systematic guidance on how to use the library catalog.
