Abstract

In the nineteenth century people usually regarded nature as the field where men met God. They thought that men could see God's purposes through observing nature keenly. Unlike her contemporaries Dickinson thought of nature as a mysterious and independent world which didn't reveal her secret to men, and she felt awe to nature. In her nature poems, Dickinson objectively and sincerely delineats only an aspect of the nature which she could perceive. Her love poems deal with the unfulfilled love. They are distinguished for their sensitivity and capacity to catch the nuance of the intense but ever-changing feelings caused by the inner conflict of the lover. Her poems delt with death and immortality reveal the scope of her imagination: She not only treats the deathbed, corpse, funeral, or grave as a poetic material but also probes even to the afterworld. With her "Ecstacy" in life Dickinson writes the penetrating poems of death and immortality. The ambiguity, complexity and irregularities of Dickinson's poetry have been the obstacles to appreciate her genius. These are often regarded as defects resulted from her ignorance of the literary conventions. But these qualities are the "studied ugliness" in order to be faithful to the internal expression free from the external restraint. Dickinson's poetry is carefully polished one like the abstract picture in painting. She is "a good American craftsman," and her poetry shows her rich, profound and original world of imagination in spite of her seclusion in a restricted region.;자연을 神의 뜻을 유추해낼 수 있는 장소로 본 그녀의 동시대인들과는 달리 Dickinson에게 있어 자연은 인간이 이해할 수 없는 신비스럽고 독자적인 세계였다. 그리하여 그녀는 자신이 포착할 수 있는 자연의 한 순간을 진지하게 그리는 것에 만족한다. Dickinson의 연시는 충족되지 못한 사랑의 갈등이 낳은 심리의 미묘한 움직임에 대한 통찰력있는 포착이 두드러진다. 한편 임종·주검·장례·무덤 속 나아가 자신의 죽음을 가상하여 사후의 세계까지 상상해보려고 한 Dickinson의 죽음과 영생에 관한 시는 그녀가 삶에서 느낀 희열이 컸던 만큼 더욱 절실하고 호소력있게 느껴진다. 인생의 총체적인 면을 다각도에서 조망하고 있는 Emily Dickinson의 시에서 일관된 사상의 흐름을 찾으려는 것은 다소 무리이다. 그녀가 시에서 대상을 어떻게 그리고 있는 지를 보는 것이 Dickinson의 시에 대한 바른 접근법이라 생각된다. Dickinson의 시는 주제도, 소재도, 그것을 표현한 수법도 매우 특이하고 복잡하며 모호하다. 과감한 축약·경구나 수수께끼같은 표현·불규칙한 韻 또는 운의 완전무시·문법적 파격·조어등 여러 기교를 응축된 시형 속에서 다양하고 효율적으로 구사하고 있는 Dickinson의 시적 실험은 너무나 독창적인 것이어서 오랫동안 문학적 관례에 대한 그녀의 무지가 낳은 기법상의 결함으로 오해되어 왔다. 그러나 Dickinson의 시에서 볼 수 있는 여러 탈격은 외적 정형에 묶여 표현의 구속을 받는 것을 피하고 시의 내적인 구조에 충실하기 위해 '의도된 추함'이라 하겠으며, 오히려 추상화의 경우와 같이 한번의 세련을 더 거친 '기교의 시'라 하겠다.
