Abstract

Eugene Gladstone O'Neill은 그의 작품들을 통하여 신에 대한 믿음을 상실한 현대인의 내적 자아를 탐색하였다. O'Neill은 인생을 인간이 꿈꾸는 것을 이루고자 하는 열망과 그 열망의 성취를 방해하는 인간 안에 내재하는 그 어떤 것 사이의 투쟁으로 보고 있으며, 또한 인간의 본성 자체가 희망과 절망, 사랑과 증오, 육체와 정신 등의 상반된 것들에 의해 갈등을 겪고 있다고 본다. O'Neill의 작품에서 남성들은 대개 신에 대한 믿음을 상실함으로써 삶의 방향을 잃고, 이원론적 갈등에서 헤어나지 못하는 그들 자신에게 사랑과 위안을 줄 수 있는 여성을 추구하고 있다. 본 논문의 목적은 O'Neill이 그의 작품을 통해 구현하고자 하는 이러한 이상적인 여성상을 연구하고자 하는 것이다. O'Neill이 그의 작품에서 이상적인 여성상을 추구하게 된 것은 그의 사생활과 밀접한 관계를 가진다. O'Neill은 사춘기 시절에 창녀와 첫 성경험을 가진 후, 성을 그가 자신의 어머니에게서 느꼈던 순수한 사랑에 대한 반역으로 간주하게 되었다 그리하여 O'Neill은 그의 작품을 통해 어머니에 대한 죄책감을 야기시키지 않으면서도 사랑과 위안을 줄 수 있는 여성상을 구현하고자 하였다. 이러한 O'Neill의 열망은 그의 작품 속에서 'The Earth Mother'의 추구로 나타난다. 신화적 견지에서 볼 때, 'The Earth Mother'는 근본적으로 처녀, 창녀, 어머니의 세 가지 역할을 모두 다 수행할 수 있는 여성으로 남성이 궁극적으로 여성에게 구하는 안정감, 평안함, 순결함, 그리고 관능성을 모두 줄 수 있는 존재로 나타난다. 그러므로 이러한 'The Earth Mother'는 남성에게 포용력 있는 사랑을 베풀 수 있는 여성을 상징한다고 볼 수 있다. 그의 전기, 중기 작품들을 통하여서 'The Earth Mother'를 성공적으로 구현하는데 실패한 O'Neill은 그의 후기 작품에서도 계속해서 'The Earth Mother'를 추구하게 된다. O'Neill은 Long Day's Journey into Night에서 어머니에 대한 사랑, 증오, 죄책감 등으로 인해 고통받는 James Tyrone, Jr.가 그 후속편인 A Moon for the Misbegotten에서 'The Earth Mother'를 발견하여 그녀의 사랑에 힘입어 모든 갈등에서 벗어나 고통을 초극하게 만든다. 본 논문 제 Ⅱ장에서 Long Day's Journey를 Jamie가 'The Earth Mother'에 이르기 위해서 거쳐야 하는 예비 단계를 극화한 작품으로 보고, Jamie가 'The Earth Mother'를 추구하게 된 동기와 그가 'The Earth Mother'를 발견하지 못함으로써 깊은 절망에 빠지게 되는 과정을 고찰하고자 한다. 그리고 제 Ⅲ장에서 A Moon을 통해 Jamie가 Josie의 사랑에 의해 그의 죄를 고백하고 용서받음으로써 구원을 얻게 되는 것을 고찰하고, 이를 완성된 단계의 'The Earth Mother'를 구현하고 있는 작품으로 제시하고자 한다. O'Neill이 그의 마지막 작품 A Moon에서 'The Earth Mother'를 성공적으로 구현할 수 있게 되기까지 계속해서 그의 작품을 통해 'The Earth Mother'를 추구한 것은 종교를 상실한 현대인의 혼돈 된 삶에 평안과 구원을 줄 수 있는 종교의 대체물을 찾고자 하는 그의 노력의 일환이었다고 생각한다.;Eugene Gladstone O'Neill searched the inner self of a modern man who loses faith in God through his works. O'Neill thought that life is struggle between man's desire for accomplishing his own dream and something within him which prevents him from realizing his desire. And also he saw that human nature itself suffers from the conflict between opposites which are hope ＆ despair, love ＆ hate, spirit ＆ body and so on. In O'Neill is works, men, who lose faith in God, usually try to search a woman who will love them and comfort them and remove the stresses of their disoriented lives. This thesis is an attempt to study the image of the ideal woman which O'Neill tries to embody in his works. It is closely connected with his private life that O'Neill searched the ideal woman through his own works. After he had had first intercourse with a whore at puberty, O'Neill regarded sex as the revolt from the pure love he had felt for his mother. So O'Neill tried to find the woman who does not bring about his own guilty feeling for his mother, who represents pure love, and at the same time can love him and comfort him. Consequently O'Neill searched for 'The Earth Mother' in his own works. Seen from the mythological viewpoint, 'The Earth Mother' stands for the woman who is able to perform three fundamental functions of woman--virgin, whore, and mother. So 'The Earth Mother' is able to give man what he ultimately needs from woman--security, peace, purity, and sensuality. Accordingly 'The Earth Mother' can be regard as an symbol of womanhood who can give capacious love to man. O'Neill, who had not embodied 'The Earth Mother' successfully in his earlier plays, continuously tried to search 'The Earth Mother' in his last plays. In Long Day's Journey into Night, O'Neill dramatizes James Tyrone, Jr.'s motivation for searching 'The Earth Mother' and the process that Jamie is sunk in the depths of despair because he doesn't seek 'The Earth Mother'. So Ⅰ, the present writer, investigate Long Day's Journey as the preliminary stage for reaching 'The Earth Mother' in chapter Ⅱ. And in chapter Ⅲ, I present A Moon that is sequel of Long Day's Journey as the work in which the finished stage of 'The Earth Mother' is embodied. In this play, O'Neill makes Jamie confess to Josie, who is represented as 'The Earth Mother', his abominable sin and receive redemption with her love. O'Neill's continual search for 'The Earth Mother' to his last play, A Moon can be considered as a part of his struggle for finding the religious substitute that can give peace and redemption to the chaotic life of a modern man who is bereft of faith in God.
