Abstract

2차 세계대전 이후 많은 소설가들이 새로운 소설 형식 탐구에 열중하고 있을 때, Iris Murdoch은 전통적인 리얼리즘 양식을 옹호하고 그 지속적인 가치를 주장하였다. 현대철학과 현대소설이 폐쇄적이고 황폐한 자아상만 보여줄 뿐, 19세기 소설에서 볼 수 있는 다양하고 자유로운 실제 인간의 모습은 제시하지 못함을 개탄해온 Murdoch은, 현재 우리는 인간의 본성과 상창에 대해 보다 깊은 이해가 필요함을 강조한다. 이를 위하여 Murdoch은 사랑을 제시한다. 소설가겸 도덕철학가로서 인간과 그들 사이의 관계 및 도덕 문제에 관하여 항상 관심을 가져 온 Murdoch에게, 사랑은 부조리하고 우연한 세계에서 인간이 창조해야 하는 가장 중요한 덕목이다. 여기서 사랑이란, 이기적인 자아(ego)의 벽을 깨고 나와, 타인과 사물을 주관적인 환상없이 있는 그대로 보는 정확한 vision을 의미한다. 즉, 이 세상에는 자기 이외에도 우연하고 불투명한 속성을 지닌 인간들이 다양한 개성을 갖고서 공존하고 있으며, 자신과는 분리된 사물들이 객관적으로 존재함을 깨닫는 것이다. 사랑은, 인간을 실체와 선에 눈뜨게 하며, 따라서 발전과 완성으로 이끌어준다. Murdoch에게 있어서 이러한 사랑의 경험은, 바로 자유와 도덕적 성숙의 경험이고, 선한 인간이 되는 경험이다. 사랑을 통한 인간의 도덕적 성숙과 그에 따른 참다운 자아발견은 Murdoch의 작품에서 중심 주제를 이룬다. Under the Net와 The Bell에서도 같은 패턴을 볼 수 있다. Under the Net에서 Jake Donaghue는, 자기중심적 특성으로 인하여 타인들의 personality와 자신을 포함한 그들의 관계에 대해 일련의 판단의 오류를 범한다. 그러나 결국에는 자기본위의 환상에서 벗어나 인간을 타자로서 인식하는 사랑을 배우고, 이와 함께 소설가로서 자아발견에 이르게 된다. The Bell에서 자아인식이 극도로 부족한 Dora Greenfield는, 남편 Paul 및 Imberites와의 갈등을 통해 자아확립의 노력을 보여주고, 가능성으로 갖고 있던 사랑을 경험함으로써 자아인식과 성숙에 이르게 된다. Michael Meade역시 종교적 환상에 갇혀 Nick Fawley를 구원하는데 실패하지만, Nick이 죽은 후 사랑을 배우고 도의적 각성과 진정한 자기이해에 도달한다. 이들 작품에서 Murdoch은, 인간의 복합성과 다양성, 관계의 복잡성 및 세상사의 우연성을 묘사함으로써, 현재 지나치게 단순화되고 빈곤해진 인간 개념을 시정하고 현실의 실상을 독자에게 전달하고 있다. 그리고 작품 중에서 주인공들이 어렵게 배운 사랑의 덕목을, 인간이 이 세상에서 도덕적인 삶을 영위하고 바람직한 인간관계를 형성하기 위하여 지향해야 할 가장 소중한 가치로 제시하고 있다.;After the Second World War, when many novelists were searching for a new form of a novel, Iris Murdoch supported the traditional realism and its consistent value. Murdoch, regretting that modern philosophy and modern novel only portray the solitary and desolate human being, unlike the free and diverse picture of man portrayed in the 19th century novel, emphasizes that a more penetrating insight into the human nature and situation is needed in the present time. For this, Murdoch suggests love. To Murdoch, the novelist cum moral philosopher deeply engrossed by the moral problems arising from human relationships, love is the most important virtue that man ought to create in this absurd and contingent world. Love here means the vision which accurately views self and others and things without a subjective fantasy by breaking the wall of selfish ego. In other words, It is the process in which man realizes that in this world, diverse other people of contingent and opaque nature exist aside from himself, and also that things separate from self objectively exist by themselves. Love awakens man to what is real and what is good, thus leading man towards progress and perfection. Therefore, to Murdoch, the experience of love is the experience of freedom and moral maturity as well as of becoming a food man. Man's moral maturity and consequential self-awareness through love becomes the major theme in Murdoch's works. Similar patterns could be found in Under the Net and The Bell. In Under the Net, Jake Donaghue misjudges other people's personalities and his relationship to them because of his egocentric nature. However, in the end, by breaking free from the self-centered fantasy, he learns the meaning of love that acknowledges the otherness of other persons, and finds his self-identity as a novelist. In The Bell, Dora Greenfield, with extreme lack of self-knowledge in the beginning, shows her endeavours at self-knowledge through her conflicts with her husband, Paul, and with the Imberites. And by experiencing love that has remained as a possibility, she reaches self-knowledge and maturity. Also Michael Meade, caught in the religious fantasy, fails in aiding Nick Parley, but after Nick's death, learns the meaning of love and finds moral enlightenment and self-understanding. Murdoch, by portraying the multiplicity and diversity of man, the complexity of human relationship, and the contingency of world affairs in these works, is correcting the concept of man that has been too simplified and superficialized in the present time, and is relating the reality of the time to the readers. And she is suggesting that the virtue of love that characters in the two works learn is the most precious value to be aspired to in order for man to lead a virtuous life and to form an ideal human relationship in this world.
