A STUDY OF LESSING'S FEMINISM IN MARTHA QUEST

Abstract

During the last decade, there have been vigorous development in thinking about women and their roles in society and important changes have followed upon these new ideas. Feminism has surfaced as a highly important issue and male-devised orthodoxies about women's nature and roles have been changed. Doris Lessing is one of the most widely recognized contemporary writer, who is noted for her comprehensiveness and vastness of her work both thematically and formally. However, the immense appeal of Lessing's fiction rests largely on her accurate representation of female experiences and her treatment of dilemma of 'free women.' Lessing always connects her female protagonists' struggle for freedom into social, economic, biological and political perspectives, providing a larger frame - that of individual and collective. Thus, the women's search for identity involves awareness and repudiation of false myths and ideologies which justify the oppression, of which patriarchal assumptions are the most threatening to her self-development. This thesis will attempt to examine Lessing's feminism by tracing closely the impediments to Martha's search for her identity and her futile attempts to surmount her repressive surroundings through both her actions of rebellion and conformity. Although Martha does not achieve her identity, Martha Quest can be said implicitly feminist, in the sense that it challenges the patriarchal assumptions and male-dominated power structure, ultimately leading to a vision of more humane society.;최근에 들어와 여성관과 사회내의 여성역활에 대한 활발한 진전이 이루어지면서, 사회 여러 방면으로 주요 변화를 초래하게 된다. 여성 운동은 매우 중요한 과제로 등장하였고, 이로 인해 기존의 남성위주의 여성관과 여성 역할이 크게 바뀌게 된다. Lessing은 현대 여류 작가로써, 주제와 형식 두가지 면에서 복합성과 방대함으로 잘 알려져 있다. 그러나, Lessing의 작품이 지니는 호소력과 매력은 여성경험의 예리한 묘사와 소위 자유로와진 현대여성의 문제를 취급한 데 있다고 볼 수 있다. Lessing은 여성주인공의 자유추구 과정을 사회, 경제, 정치 등 여러 시각과 밀접히 연결시켜, 여성문제를 한 개인과 집단간의 역학적인 관계라는 보다 큰 테두리에서 취급하고 있다. 따라서, 자아를 실현하기 위하여 여성은, 자아를 억압시키는 극도의 위협 요인인 가부장적 사고방식을 포함한 일종의 허위의식과 현존체계를 지속시키는 이데오로기를 일단 인식하고, 그로부터 탈피해야 하는 것이다. 이 논문은 Martha Quest 작품에서, Martha의 자아추구의 장애요인들과 반발과 순응의 연속적인 행위를 통해 억압적인 주위환경을 극복하려는 Martha의 시도를 살펴봄으로써, Lessing의 feminism을 조명해보고자 한다. 비록 Martha는 이 책에서 끝내 자아추구에 실패하나, Martha Quest 작품은 남성지배위주의 권력체계와 가부장제 사고방식에 정면으로 도전하여 보다 인간적인 사회 vision을 꾀했다는 면에서 feminist라는 결론을 내릴 수 있다.
