CERTAIN FEMINIST PROBLEMS AND ITS FORMULATION IN THE WORKS OF VIRGINIA WOOLF

Abstract

Virginia Woolf는 평생 여성과 창작의 문제에 대하여 깊은 통찰을 한 작가이고, Woolf 연구는 이 두 문제를 촛점으로 이루어지는 경향이다. 주로 Woolf는 모더니즘에 기여한 심미적, 의식의 흐름 작가로서 평가를 받고 있지만, 이에 못지 않게 여성문학의 흐름에 큰 줄기를 마련한 feminist writer로서의 위치도 중요하다고 본다. Woolf 자신은 feminst라는 단어를 자기 자신에게 적용하는 것을 싫어했고, 또한 직접적으로 여권운동에 참여한 사실이 없음에도 불구하고 여성을 주체적인 대상으로 소설을 쓴 점에서, 현대 문학에 있어서 여성문학의 독자적인 위치를 확보하는 계기를 마련한 작가라고 하겠다. 엄밀한 의미에서 오늘날 말하는 바와 같은 여성문학이 거론되지 않았던 20세기 초에 Woolf는 기존 남성위주 문학 틀내에 이식, 도입, 종속문학의 형태로 존재하였던 여성의 글에 공통적인 특질이 흐르는 전통이 있다는 입장을 취하였고, 이리하여 Woolf는 여성문학을 주장한 첫 작가로 평가받는다. 또한 Woolf는 실제적인 창작과정에서 여성작가를 가로막는 모든 것을 구체화시킨 존재를 "집안의 천사"라고 명명하여 자신이 글을 쓰기 이전에 그 가상적 존재를 어떻게 극복하였는 가에 대하여 논하였다. 그는 여자가 소설을 쓴다는 것의 의미를 사회구조의 틀에서 분석하여, 구조적으로 여성작가를 억압하는 물질적 요소들을 파악하였고 이것은 그의 대표적인 feminist essays라고 불리어지는 A Room of One's Own과 Professions for Women에 나타나있다. 본 논문에서는 이들을 분석하여 여성작가가 창작과정에서 겪는 난관과 물질적 환경을 살펴서 Woolf의 문학관을 정리하고, 이런 관점이 To The Lighthouse에서 어떻게 적용되어, 어떤 양상을 띄게 되었는가를 조명하여, Woolf의 작품에 형상화된 여성의식을 고찰하고자 한다.;Virginia Woolf was a feminist and a major force in reshaping the novel in the twentieth century, And criticism about Woolf tends to be polarized between two such recognitions. In this study, my overarching concern was to bring to light the novels not as meditations on philosophical themes, or innovative fictional technique but as personal treatment of vital and immediate problems of identity by combining a close reading of her works with historical and sociological readings of her personal life and times. For Woolf, though she did not like the term, was a feminist and one of the largest contributor to the establishment of feminist literary culture. The themes that she discussed in her major feminist essays A Room OF One's Own and "Professions for Women," are those central to feminist literature. Not only is her insight to the effects of material condition to a woman's writing a profound contribution. Woolf explored the underlying psychological as well as economical causes of masculine dominance and female repression. The general problems facing women -their restricted vocational opportunities, their relation to power and money, their rights and their duties -are all looked from a feminist perspective. She illuminates the consequences of social structure on an individual and emerges as a profound analyst and eloquent advocate of their lives. Woolf had felt a primary bond to other women and she understood her life as a part of a patriarchal system in which women are intended as reflectors, servants and objects of men's visions. But the internalized patriarchal precepts also informs her novel stating contrasting impulse toward the issue of selfhood. The desire to be "The Angel in the House" and the urge to reject her in favour of independence and achievement is interwined in her quest for a meaningful, authentic Identity identity. Her confrontation with the irreconciliable identity between the ideal of "womanhood" and her road to achievement constructs her directly autobiographical novel, To The Lighthouse which will be analyzed in accordance with such feminist perspective.
