John Webster의 The Duchess of Malfi 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서는 John Webster의 작품, The Duchess of Malfi의 여성 주민공인 Malfi공작 부인이 다른 등장 인물들과의 사이에서 겪는 심리적 갈등과 사회적 갈등을 살펴봄으로 해서 주인공인 Malfi공작 부인의 인물형에 대해 연구한다. 영국이 Elizabeth 여왕 통치 말기와 James 1세 통치시대에는 정치적, 사회적으로 혼란스러운 시기로서 특히 오랜 기간 동안의 통화 팽창과 귀족의 수 증가, 그리고 귀족들의 사치로 인해 귀족 계급이 불안정해졌다는 것이 사회 혼란의 가장 큰 원인이었다. 그런 가운데 청교도들은 청빈한 생활과 부부 생활의 중요성을 강조하여 부부간의 평등 개념을 만들어 냈으며, 인문주의자들은 중세 romance 에 등장하는 courtly love를 공격하여 문학에서 여성을 stereotype 로만 묘사하는 것을 비난했다. 이것은 여성을 인간 타락의 원인으로 간주하던 전통적 관념을 변화시키는 계기를 마련했다. 극장에서도 변화가 일어나, 관객의 계층이 일반 대중들로 바뀌게 되었고, 여성은 관객 수의 반을 차지하게 되었다. 극작가들은 여성 관객의 관심사에 발을 맞추고, 기존 사회에 대한 반감을 표시하기 위해 점차 자신의 극에 여성 주인공을 등장시키기 시작했다. 여성 주인공들이 많이 등장하게 되는 Jacobean drama의 대표적인 인물은 John Webster의 The Duchess of Malfi의 주인공인 Malfi공작 부인이 손꼽힌다. 그녀는 남성 중심 사회에 의해 억압받고 인간으로서의 존엄성을 무시당하면서도 자신의 주체성을 잃지 않고, 자기 주장을 확실히 할 수 있는 여성으로 그려지고 있다. Malfi 공작 부인은 과부에게 강요되는 관습을 지키도록 형제들로부터 요구받으나, 그에 굴복하지 않고 자신의 뜻대로 재혼을 한다. 이를 알게된 형제들로부터 공작 부인은 고통을 받게 되지만, 끝까지 자신의 정체성을 잃지 않고 정신적인 승리를 거두는 숭고함을 보여준다. John Webster는 자신의 극에 부정적인 개념의 여성인물이 아니라 긍정적인 이미지를 가진 여성인물 즉, 가부장제도 하에서의 전통적인 여성상을 거부하고 여성을 억압하는 남성적 권위에 대항하여 자신의 확고한 자존심과 위엄을 지켜나가는 인물을 그리고 있다. Malfi 공작부인은 여성에 대해 긍정적 가치를 부여하려고 했던 그 시대의 관심사를 잘 나타내는 새로운 여성상이 되었고, 남성과 다름없이 여성도 인간으로서의 존엄성과 권리를 가지고 있으며, 주체성과 자존심을 지닌 귀중한 존재라는 것을 보여준다.;This thesis deals with the phychological and the social conflicts in The Duchess of Malfi manifested the character of the Duchess of Malfi. In the Jacobean period, society was disorderly politically and socially. And the main reason for the social disorder was the instability of the peerage which was due to the corruption of the society by title trade, the long period of inflation and the lavish expenditure of them. In the meantime, the Puritans created the notion of sexual equality by emphasizing the importance of conjugal relationship, and Humanists attacked the ethic of courtly love in medieval romance for the reason that the medieval romance depicted women not as rational beings, but as stereotypes. So, Puritans and Humanists contributed to change the negative image of women into positive image. And this tendency produced some changes in the theatre : the audience has constituted by an extremely diverse group of people, and the half of them were women. So dramatists began to represent female protagonists to please the female audience and to express their antipathy against the corrupt society. As a result, many female protagonists appear in Jacobean dramas. Especially, John Webster's female protagonist, the Duchess of Malfi in The Duchess of Malfi, is praised as one of the most outstanding female protagonists in the Jacobean period. The Duchess of Malfi is the character who struggles to keep the pride and the self-assertion although she is oppressed by the male authority, and her dignity as a human being is neglected by the society. The Duchess of Malfi is demanded to keep her chastity as a widow by her brothers, but she does not obey them, and remarries her servant. Although her brothers annoy her after they become to know her remarriage, the Duchess of Malfi keeps her identity and dignity at her death, so she shows the spiritual triumph over the oppression of the male authority. And finally, the Duchess of Malfi is killed by the male authority, but her death gives moral order to the confused society. In conclusion, John Webster created the new image of women. The Duchess of Malfi is the female character who denies the traditional feminine image and protects her pride and the human dignity. Importantly, the Duchess of Malfi underlines that women have the same human dignity and the same human rights as men have, and women are the valuable beings who have their own identity and pride. Moreover, the Duchess of Malfi shows the nod· feminine mage which is suitable to the interests of the times which try to give positive value to women.
