Abstract
Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead를 'the play-life metaphor' 중심으로 분석하였다. Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead에서 Stoppard는 Hamlet이라는 제한적 세계 속에 불운한 단짝으로 창조된 두 중심인물들이 그들의 존재 기반인 text의 세력에 의해 허구화되는 상황을 극화하고 있다. Tom Stoppard is a contemporary British playwright who has expanded the limit of theatre through a daring introspective experimentation concerning 'the illusion of reality' itself which is the heart of the conventional system of the realistic drama. This thesis analyzes his first representative work, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which most intensively embodies one of the outstanding characteristics of Stoppard's plays, 'the reflexive theatricality'. An approach to the reappraisal of reality pursued within the paradoxical relationship between illusion and reality is the expected result from this kind of analysis. In the space set in the wings of a production of Hamlet, Ros and Guil, the two bewildered bit-players, are placed in a playworld where thor could neither choose nor control for themselves. On this stage, the nam action of the two central characters, irrelevant to their intentions, is nothing but mere 'illusion' and they are confirmed as actors who consummate the theatrical reality. Conclusively, in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Stoppard dramatizes the situation where the two attendant lords, created as an unfortunate pair in the stalemated world of Hamlet, are fictionalized by the force of the text which is the basis of their existence. This is also the central idea of this work which describes the universal futility of life where man is overwhelmed by the ultimate fictiveness of reality through his confrontation with the world that denies him and therefore frustrates him.
