Abstract

Peter Shaffer는 전후 영구 연극계에서 어느 유파에도 속하지 않고 순수한 연극성을 지향하며 다양한 극작 기법의 구현과 폭넓은 주제적 탐색을 통하여 총체적 연극을 실현하고자 했던 작가이다. Shaffer극의 가장 두드러지는 특성은 대립되는 두 가지 세계관의 본질적 갈등을 통한 극의 전개이며 그러한 갈등 중 인간을 속박하는 기존 제도, 관념과 인간의 원초적이고 자유로운 열정사이의 갈등은 가장 기본적인 것이다. 그의 대표작이라 할 수 있는 The Royal Hunt of the Sun에서도 갈등의 문제가 주제의 중심을 이루고 있다. 스페인의 페루 원정으로 인해 일어나는 유럽 문명과 잉카 문명의 충돌 안에서 사회·문화적 차원과 개인적 차원의 이차원적 갈등이 제시된다. 사회·문화적 차원에서는 두 문명의 문화적, 종교적 갈등을 통해 자기중심적 이기주의와 탐욕에 물든 유럽 문명의 분열성과 진정한 믿음의 제공에 실패한 기독교의 불모성이 드러난다. 이와 대조적으로 획일성과 무탐욕의 문화인 잉카문명은 태양신 숭배라는 강렬한 신앙적 구심점의 존재에 의한 조화와 통합의 양상을 보여준다. 개인적 차원에서는 두 문명을 가기 대표하는 인물인 Pizarro와 Atahuallpa의 갈등과 Pizarro의 내면적 갈등이 제시된다. 기독교와 유럽의 세계에 대해 굉장한 회의를 느끼고 진정한 믿음을 찾아 페루에 온 Pizarro은 인간으로서 죽음을 극복할 수 없음을 깨달은 후 비관적이고 회의적인 인물이 되었으나 낙관적이며 영생을 확신하는 태양신의 아들 Atahuallpa와의 관계에서 신의 존재를 발견하고자 한다. Atahuallpa가 죽음을 극복하고 부활하는 것에 마지막 기대를 걸었던 Pizarro는 Atahuallpa의 부활의 실패로 삶에 대한 궁극적 환멸을 경험하게 되고 갈등의 결과는 유럽문명, 잉카문명, Pizarro, Atahuallpa 모두의 파멸과 죽음으로 나타난다. 그러나 그러한 좌절 속에서도 Pizarro가 인간 사이에 존재하는 유대감과 사랑에 대한 소중한 깨달음을 얻을 수 있었다는 것은 Shaffer가 갈등의 구조를 통해 서구 문명 비판을 시도함과 동시에 인간 사이에 존재하는 긍정적 가치를 부각시킨 것이라고 볼 수 있다.;Peter Shaffer has consistently endeavored to perfect his skill as a playwright aiming at genuinely entertaining drama. His main intention in creating a play is to realize a total theatre through the combination of varied dramatic techniques and extensive thematic inquiries. The most prominent characteristic of Shaffer's plays is that they are always developed through strong basic conflicts. Among these conflicts, the most fundamental one is that between man's primitive, free passion and the existing system, ideas which restrain it [passion]. The problem of conflict is also central in his most acclaimed work, The Royal Hunt of the Sun. Bi-dimensional conflicts are presented in the collision of the European Civilization and Incan Civilization: that of socio-cultural dimension and personal dimension. In the socio-cultural dimension, the disintegration of European civilization imbued with self-interest and materialistic greed is revealed along with the inadequacy of the Christian religion to provide authentic vehicle for man's spiritual needs. In contrast, Incan civilization, characterized by uniformity and greedlessness, displays the aspects of harmony and integration through the existence of intense faith in the form of sun worship. In the personal dimension, the conflict between Pizarro and Atahuallpa (who respectively represent the two civilizations) and Pizarro's internal conflict is presented. Pizarro undertakes the expedition to Peru in order to find a true faith which can help him to overcome death. He is deeply sarcastic and skeptical about everything after realizing that as a human being he cannot evade death. However, in his relationship with Atahuallpa, the son of the sun, who firmly believes in his immortality, Pizarro believes that he has finally found an object for worship. He eventually stakes all his hope in the resurrection of Atahuallpa and as a result, experiences ultimate disillusionment when he [Atahuallpa] fails to do so. The outcome of the bi-dimensional conflicts is ruin and destruction on all sides: European Civilization and Incan Civilization, Pizarro and Atahuallpa. However, even in the devastating course of destruction and despair, Pizarro comes to recognize the value of the solidarity and love among men. The fact that Pizarro was able to do so implies that Shaffer has aimed at emphasizing the positive human values concurrently with criticism of European Civilization through the frame of bi-dimensional conflicts.
