T. S. Eliot의 詩的意識의 양극성 연구

Abstract

한 시대의 문학은 당 시대의 문화 전체와 필연적 연관을 가지고 있으며 이 연관성을 통해서 총체적으로 이해된다고 할 때, Eliot(1888-1965)의 문학 활동은 낭만주의 문학 이론에 대한 반동으로 시작된다. 인간의 완전함을 믿는 19세기의 낙천적 사고에 대해 Eliot은 인간의 근본적인 불완전성을 熟知하고 궁극적 실재를 지향하는 자세로 과거와 관련된 하나의 계통적인 질서를 추구하며 더 나아가서는 인간의 궁극적 목표의 대상을 탐구하는 자세로 나타난다. Eliot의 초기시에 나타나는 'overwhelming question'의 물음은 이같은 知的, 정신적 탐구를 강하게 반영하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 궁극적 실재를 목표로 자아 정립을 시도하는 과정에서 갈등하고 대립하는 시적 의식의 양극성(the polarity of poetic consciousness)을 고찰함으로써, 현실을 바탕으로해서 완전한 상태를 추구하는 시인의 자세를 살펴보고자 한다. 시인의 의식 속에서 완전한 자아 정립의 가능성과 역사 속에 나타난 본래적인 자아의 모습을 "Prufrock"과 "Gerontion" 에서 살펴보고, 이 두편의 시 속에 나타난 자아 정립 실패의 모습이 더욱 구체적으로 분열의 심연까지 내려간 자아로 제시되고 있음을 "The Hollow Men"을 통해 고찰하고자 한다. "Journey of the Magi"에서는 二分의 갈등을 넘어 새로운 출발로서, 혹은 문제의 해결로서 'Incarnation'경험의 여행을 떠나는 영혼의 탐색으로 중요성을 부여하고자 한다. 그러나 Incarnation이란 종교적 사건을 경험하면서도 그것의 의미를 완전하게 이해 못하는 Magus의 자아 정립을 통해서 궁극적 실재는 인간에게 'overwhelming question'일뿐 아니라 'overwhelming experience'임을 알 수 있다. Prufrock의 'overwhelming question'에 대한 물음에 답이 주어지지 않고 Magus의 Incarnation 경험 후에도 계속 고뇌에 싸이는 사실에는 현실의 구체적인 진지성과 계속성이 함축되어 있는 것이다. 그러므로 실재를 지향한 자아 정립의 문제는 현실이 계속되는 한 완결된 definition으로 객관화될 수 없고, 시에 나타난 의식으로서 시적 양극성은 자아 정립 가능성으로서 현실 속에 존재하는 인간이 궁극적 실재로서 자기 자신을 실현해 가는 과정에 있는 한 항상 긴장 상태로 나타나고 있다.;Eliot's poetry begins with the reaction to romantic doctrine which dictates the poet's inner voice. Eliot thinks one is prepared for art when one has ceased to be interested in one's own emotions and experiences and tries to search for the Absolute Truth as the order of his own contemporary. His rage of order is shown in the 'historical sense' of tradition and in the quest of the ultimate reality of human beings. This attitude reflected clearly in the early poems appears as an overwhelming question that can not be questioned. Therefore his whole search, as a poet and as a thinker, has been for a higher order which will discipline his irritable excitability and his talent for critically negative and satirical delineation. The problem of self-definition in the conflicts in consciousness is revealed in "Prufrock" and the identity of reflective-self in history is reflected in "Gerontion." "The Hollow Men"symbolized as a state of being in the bottom suggests the deepest despair of Prufrock and Gerontion who fail to do self-definition. In the situation of "The Hollow Men " towards the new life, "Journey of the Magi" starts on the quest-journey of the religious-self. But the experience of Incarnation is an overwhelming experience to Magus as well as an overwhelming question to Prufrock. The recognition of the overwhelming question and experience is related to the serious, concrete and continuous life in the world. Therefore so far as the actual is continued the problem of self-definition towards the Absolute Truth can not be completed ; the polarity of poetic consciousness is continued so far as the human being who is existing on the possibility of self-definition is related to the Absolute Truth.
