T. S. Eliot의 Four quartets 연구

Abstract

T.S.Eliot은 Four Quartets를 통해 삶과 죽음, 욕망과 죄악의 끝없는 순환과정으로 경험되는 시간 세계와 그러한 시간 세계를 구제(redemption)해 줄 수 있는 영원 불변의 절대 세계에 대해 깊이있는 사색을 펴나간다. Eliot의 시간 인식에 따르면, 시간의 사슬에 묶여있는 인간은 과거, 현재, 미래의 박자에 맞춰 춤을 추다가 죽음으로 끝을 맺고, 시간 속의 삼라만상 모두가 생성-변화-파괴(죽음)의 회전속에서 맴돌고 있을 뿐이다. 그는 이러한 상황에 대한 문제의식을 시초로 시간 세계의 황폐함과 무의미함을 구제해 줄 수 있는 가능성을 추구하게 된다. 우선 Ash Wednesday의 세계에서처럼 시간의 구제 문제에 대한 해결은 시간세계와 상반된 차원, 즉 영원의 세계에서 얻을 수가 있다. 이 영원의 차원은 Four Quartets에서 'the still point of the turing world'로서 제시되고 있으며, 기독교적 문화권에서 성장한 Eliot에게 'the still point'는 곧 이 세계를 섭리하는 Christian God로서 인식되고 있다. 'the still point'의 세계는 死後의 영혼의 구원을 통해 도달할 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 神과의 合一을 경험하는 신비한 초시간적 순간에도 도달할 수 있는 정신적인 세계로서, 이 곳에서 시간 세계의 모든 모순과 대립은 조화와 통일로 화해를 이룬다. 그러나 神과의 合一을 경험하는 그 강렬한 순간은 시간으로부터 완전히 고립되어 있을 수 없으며, 또한 그 순간이 지니고 있는 의미는 죽음과 파괴로 향하는 이 시간 가운데 지을 때에만 인정될 수 있는 것이다. 따라서 시간세계의 부정적인 의미를 구제하려는 문제는 영원성의 차원만으로는 해결될 수 없으며, 혹 종교적 명상을 통한 시간의 초월이란 점에서 종교적 차원의 해결을 이룬다할지라도, 그것은 시간의 차원을 도피한 불완전한 해결인 것이다. 이러한 인식을 바탕으로, Four Quartets에서 제기된 '시간의 구제'문제는 시간과 영원의 상반된 차원을 종합적으로 수용하는 태도로써 그 해결을 추구한다. Eliot은 시간과 영원이 완전하게 통일된 순간을 기독교의 'In carnation'을 통해 제시하고 있다. 'Incarnation'이란 무시간적인 神이 시간적인 육체의 모습으로 시간 안에 들어온 사건으로서, 神性과 人性, 영원과 시간, 영혼과 육체의 相反性을 통일시킨 완전한 例를 보여주고 있으며, 부정과 파괴의 이 황무지적 현실 세계에 긍정적인 의미를 부여해주고 있다. 즉 시간의 법칙이 지배하는 이 현실 세계는 그리스도에 의해, 영혼의 병을 치유받을 수 있는 '병원으로서의 의미를 지니게 된 것이다. 이처럼 이 세계(the time)를 부정하지 않고 저 세계(the timeless)와 더불어 양 차원의 의미를 모두 인정하는 Eliot은 시간과 영원, 현상과 실재의 상반성에 대해 전체 속에서 종합적으로 인식할 것을 강조하고 있다. 결국 Four Quartets 에서 제시된 '시간의 구제'문제에 대한 이해는 시간에서 도피한 영원의 차원에서가 아니라, 시간과 영원을 모두 포함하는 종합적인 인식에 의해 이루어지고 있으며, 바로 이러한 점이 Four Quartets를 Eliot의 가장 성숙되고 철학적인 깊이를 지닌 詩로 평가하게 하는 것이다.;In Four Quartets T.S. Eliot explores the relation between the time and the timeless. The former is perceived as the everlasting cycle of life and death, and desire and sin, while the latter as harmony and union in the world of God. This is the same aspect as his earlier poems like The Waste Land, or Ash Wednesday. In the succession of time, man who is woven with the past, the present, and the future ends only in 'dung and death' (EC Ⅰ), and the nature turns in the world of changes. And then, Eliot pursues the Word [Logos] which can redeem the condition of the time. The waste and meaningless condition of the time can be solved and redeemed in the timeless, that is, in 'the still point' of God. There, the opposites and the contrast of 'the turning world' change into the harmony and the oneness, which are recognized by 'the sudden illumination' (DS Ⅱ). However, the intense moment can not be isolated from the time, because that moment can be perceived through the time. So, it is very important to recognize that 'Only through time is time conquered' (BN Ⅱ). And the recognition like this prepares, the synthetic thought of the time and the timeless. Eliot represents the 'Incarnation' as the moment of the paradoxical union of the time and the timeless. The event of the Incarnation gives the positive meaning to the earth as the 'hospital', in which Christ heals the spiritual disease, 'Adam's Curse'. So, the waste-land condition can be redeemed through the In-carnation, into the true condition which is the harmonious synthesis of the time and the timeless, or the appearance and the reality. Fianlly, the problem of 'the redemption of time' in Four Quartets is solved not by the elimination into the timeless dimension from the time, but by the synthetic recognition of the opposite dimensions. And that is why Four Quartets is evaluated as the richest and profoundest poem of T.S. Eliot's.
