They are ignorant, simple. and passive. However, they are also wise, active, and even shrewd. They also have human weaknesses, pain, and sometimes superior humanity to that of whites. Twain is known as a defender of blacks. He made conscious efforts to help blacks, He recommended Frederick Douglass, a black leader, to an office and donated black scholarships. He lectured for blacks and read books about blacks to deepen his understanding of them. He criticized slavery. and tried to present an undistorted image of blacks through those characters in his novels. Twain's black characters are an example of his support of black cause. They broke white supremacy and prejudice towards blacks who were believed to be only ignorant, simple, and passive, They showed that blacks are human beings who can feel, think, and act. Twain left a greater tribute to the black race in the characters of Nigger Jim and Roxy than any other American writer did.
