Henry Vaughan의 Silex Scintillans 연구

Abstract

Henry Vaughan의 종교시집인 Silex Scintillans는 종교시인으로서 Vaughan의 자치를 인정받게한 시집으로 그의 영적 변화의 과정이 분명하게 나타나는 시인의 '영적 고투의 기록서'이다. 그리고 그 주제로 인간의 영적 재생(regeneration)의 문제를 다룬다. 초기의 비평가들은 Silex Scintillans를 이미지에 촛점을 맞추어 분석한 결과 시집의 전체적인 구조를 파악하는데 부족한 점이 있었다. Martz와 같은 평자는 Silex Scintillans의 초판만을 분석의 대상으로 삼고 증보판은 논의에서 제외시키고 있다. 그러나 Silex Scintillans는 초판과 증보판이 서로 유기적으로 결합되어 하나의 전체를 이룬다고 생각된다. 본고에서는 Silex Scintillans에 유기적 통일성을 부여하고 있는 것을 영적 재생을 위한 시인의 영적 순례의 과정으로 보고, 이를 중심으로 Silex Scintillans을 분석하였다. Silex Scintillans의 1부는 순례의 초기단계로 영적재생의 시작과 신의 연단과 정화를 통한 Sanctification의 과정이다. 자신의 죄를 깨닫고 회개한 후 신의 부름을 경험하고 빛과 생명인 신에게로 나아가기 위해 노력하는 시인의 모습이 나타난다. Silex Scintillans의 2부는 Sanctification의 말기 단계에서 궁극적 목적인 Glorification을 향해 나아가는 단계이다. Sanctification의 과정을 거쳐 성숙된 시인이 천상의 것들을 바라보며 구원과 부활의 확신에 차서 죽음을 통한 영혼의 해방과 영적 재생의 완성을 기대하는 모습이 나타난다. Vaughan의 종교시는 Herbert의 영향을 많이 받았으나, 종교적 각성 이후의 Vaughan의 자연에 대한 독특한 인식으로 인해 독창적인 성격을 지니게 된다. Vaughan은 성서와 자연속에 나타난 신의 섭리를 깨닫고 영혼의 재생을 이루고자 노력한 종교시인이다.;Henry Vaughan's divine poems, Silex Scintillans, are the records of the spiritual struggle which express his own spiritual progress. And the theme of Silex Scintillans is regeneration of the human soul through the union with God. Silex Scintillans as a whole is carefully designed to achieve the unity-through the dominant metaphor of the Christian pilgrimage; the progression from regeneration to the plateau of assurance in his spiritual life. Part Ⅰ of Silex Scintillans presents the earlier stages of Vaughan's experience as Christian pilgrim: these include his keen awareness of sin and his repentance; his experience of God's calling and the beginnings of regeneration;his abiding consciousness of death and of the obscurity of human vision;and his many spiritual experiences as he strives toward God who is life and light. Part Ⅱ of Siles Scintillans presents the later stages of his spiritual life; he presents himself as a mature, experienced Christian well advanced in the path of sanctification, whose eyes and desires are firmly fixed upon heavenly things. In Part Ⅱ he desires more intensely than before, but yet anticipates with more assurance and calmness, his soul's impending liberation in death. Despite Vaughan's debt to George Herbert, Vaughan adds the distinctive touch of his own insight of nature to his poetry. Vaughan is more interested in natural creation, in the landscape of the country, than Herbert; nature is for him a means to God. And his poem contains some impressive natural description. In conclusion, Henry Vaughan is a poet who finds the way to God in nature and seeks regeneration of human soul.
