Abstract

In the contemporary literature, 'Modernism' has been discussed primarily focusing on poetry. The subject of this thesis is to grasp the concepts and the traits of the modernism novel in the Korean literary history, questioning why most discussions of the modernism set limits to poetry. The result is as following: In the second, this study tried to examine the origination and concept of Western Modernism, and devided the concepts into two view-point, broad and narrow one. In broad term, modernism covers the trend of the contemporary literature. And, in the case that we regard modernism as contempory mind, we could apply it to the narrative of fictions. In the third chapter, the modernity of the novel is discussed in the light of Western theories. Its traits are as following. Modernism novel is 1) to investigate man's inner conciousness by means of the "Stream of conciousness", 2) to be different from the previous novels in a visual point of the narration and in the aspect of conflicts in self, 3) to arrange in a row time and space in the space demension and the montage technique, 4) to be characteristic in the author's conciousness and his character's transfiguration. In the fourth chapter, this study applied the traits of Modernism to the novels of Lee Sang and tried interpretative approach in the light of self-conciousness, inner monologue, time ane space demension, the aspects of conflict and character's personality. In the fifth chapter, this study dealt with some other modern novels in the 1930's, for instance, the novels in "Dancheung." This theis intended to gey out of a general tendency that Modernism is just modernism in poetry, and apply Modernism to the novel. Considering that Modernism continues to influence on the contemporary literature, it is significant, I think, to difine the modernity in the novel.;현대 문학에 있어 모더니즘은 주로 詩에 적용되어 논의되어 왔다. 본 논문은 한국 현대문학사에 기존하는 여타의 모더니즘 논의들이 주로 詩부분에 편향되어 있음에 의문을 제기함으로써, 모더니즘 소설에 관한 개념과 특질을 파악하고자 한 것이다. 논의의 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. Ⅱ장에서는 서구 모더니즘의 발생과 개념을 파악해 보았으며, 이로 인해 도출된 모더니즘의 개념을 넓은 의미와 좁은 의미로 나눠 보았다. 광의의 의미에서 모더니즘은 현대 문학사조를 총괄하는 개념으로써, 모더니즘의 정신을 현대 정신으로 이해할 경우 소설에서의 논의가 가능함을 살펴볼 수 있었다. Ⅲ장에서는 소설에서의 모더니즘적 특질, 곧 소설의 모더니티를 알아보고자 했으며 서구이론에 비추어 다음과 같은 특징을 찾아낼 수 있었다. 첫째, 모더니즘 소설은 ＜의식의 흐름＞을 기법으로 하여 인간의 내면적 의식을 탐구하려는 것이며, 둘째, 서술의 시점 문제와 자아의 대결양상이 종래의 소설과 다른 점을 들 수 있겠고, 세째, 공간성과 영상기법의 문제로 나타나는 시간과 공간의 병치를 들 수 있으며, 네째, 작가의식과 인물의 변이 등에서 그 특징이 나타나고 있다. Ⅳ장에서는 앞장에서 추출된 특질을 중심으로 李箱 소설에 적용, 그 해석적 접근을 시도하였으며 李箱 소설을 자의식과 내적독백, 時 · 空의 문제, 대결양상과 인물의 특성에 비추어 모더니즘 소설로 파악해 보았다. Ⅴ장에서는 기타 1930년대의 모더니즘 소설로서 동인지 「단층」의 작가들을 살펴봄으로써 심리주의적 특징으로 규정되고 있는 「단층」의 작가들을 모더니즘의 관점에서 포괄적으로 살펴 보았다. 본 논문 모더니즘이 곧 시의 모더니즘이라는 등식에서 탈피하여 소설에서의 그 존재 가능성을 파악한 것이며, 모더니즘이 아직도 지속적으로 영향능력을 행사하는 문학 현상이라는 점에서 소설의 모더니티 규정 문제는 그 의의가 있으리라 생각된다.
