Abstract

본 논문은 白菱 채만식(1902 - 1950)의 희곡에 대한 연구이다. 채만식의 희곡에 나타나는 인물의 성격을 분석하여 작품 속에 내재되어 있는 작가의식을 추출해 내는 것이 그 목적이다. Ⅱ장에서는 작가 채만식의 가정환경과 그를 둘러싼 사회 · 경제적 시대상을 살펴보고 그것이 작품에 어떻게 반영되고 있는지 살폈다. Ⅲ장에서는 희곡에서의 인물의 성격에 대해서 살피고, 등장인물들을 주어진 상황에 대처하는 자세에 따라서 4유형-적극적으로 행동하는 사회주의계열의 인물, 불합리한 현실과 전통적 가치관에 저항하는 인물, 사회 · 경제적으로 소외되는 나약한 지식인, 조건상황을 숙명으로 받아들이는 상황에 순응하는 인물-으로 나누어 살폈다. 또한 작품의 공간적 배경을 도시와 농촌으로 구분하여 인물유형과의 관계도 살폈다. Ⅳ장에서는 Ⅲ장에서 밝혀진 등장 인물들의 특성을 바탕으로 하여 희곡 작품에 나타나는 작가의 주제의식을 고찰한 바, 조국의 광복과 역사의 합목적성에 대한 신념, 식민지 시대의 나약한 지식인의 갈등과 우민화교육에 대한 비판, 모순된 자본주의 경제구조에 대한 비판 신 · 구가치관의 혼동속에서 올바른 가치관의 정립 등의 모티프를 추출해 내었다. 채만식의 희곡에 등장하는 모든 유형의 인물들의 공통점은 그들 모두가 식민지시대의 불공정한 사회적 상황속에서 살아가고 있는 조선의 민중이라는 것이다. 농촌과 도시 구석구석에서 살아가고 있는 전형적인 인물들을 창출해 낸 것은 평가받을 만한 일이다. 다만 희곡의 특성을 좀 더 살린 생동하는 입체적 인물의 창출이 미흡한 것이 아쉽다. 이상의 논의에서 채만식의 희곡에 나타난 인물들의 특성은 채만식의 일관된 저항의식과 역사에 대한 인식이 투철한 인식의 표현이었음이 밝혀졌다. 본 논문에서 밝혀진 채만식 희곡의 특성은 그의 문학작품에 대한 논의를 보다 깊이있게 하며 한국희곡사에 그의 위치를 정립하는 데 하나의 바탕이 될 것으로 기대한다.;This study is to analyze the characteristics of characters in the plays by Chae, Man-Shik. The focus of the analysis is to reveal the playwright's idea which exists as undercurrents in his plays. First, a study is made on the playwright's family surroundings and the socio-economic situations of his age which are reflected in his plays. According to the character's responses to the given situation they are categorized in four types - the positive action taking socialistic characters, the complaining characters who escape to the abroad in order to overcome present difficulties, the isolated intellctual characters, and the passive characters who fatefully succum to the present situation. Also a study is made on the relationship of the types of characters related to either the farming villages or cities. The playwright's thematic ideas are extracted from the character-analysis in his plays. They are identified as the playwright's conviction on the rightness of history ; the criticism on the imperialistic education and the intellectual's inner conflict during the age of Japanese occupation ; the criticism on the capitalistic economic system; the setting up of the valid value judgment in the chaotic time of old and new ideas. The common point of all types of characters in the plays by Chae, Man Shik is that they were all common Korean people who were forced to live unfairly in the age of Japanese occupation. It is highly evaluated that the playwright could create typical characters both from rural areas and cities. Yet, this study has come to the conclusion that the playwright could not fully create living round characters- It is expected that the characteristic of Chae, Man-Shik's plays which is shown in this study can be the first step to discuss his plays more deeply and provide the basis to establish his place in the history of drama of Korea.
