Theodore Dreiser의 Sister Carrie와 An American Tragedy 연구

Abstract

In his novels, Dreiser portrays man as a being whose Life is determined by environment, heredity, instinct and chance instead of his free-will. This is a naturalistic point of view based on mechanistic determinism. Dreiser has embraced Naturalism as a result of rapid changes in society, economics and thoughts in america in the middle of 19th century. America and Americans, as Dreiser saw them, were losing positive values represented by 'American Innocence' under the evil influences of industrialization and capitalism. American society was dominated by materialistic forces taking precedence over all other values. 'American Dream', a manifestation of optimistic idealism of Americans, was diminished to mere craving for materialistic success and corrupted. Dreiser thought that the corrupted forces of society, implanting distorted values and illusion, were the factors which determined lives of individuals who lacked the will power to restrain these forces. Therefore the hardships suffered by the characters in Dreiser's novels are due to social evils. ALL the characters in Sister Carrie give in to corrupt values implanted by society. Whether they achieve worldly success or not, moral failure is inevitable as long as they pursue such a goal. In An American Tragedy, Clyde Griffiths blindly pursues the American dream of success but brings on a tragic end in a collision with exclusive and cruel society. Dreiser regarded the American society as an immoral one Lacking democratic justice and depriving opportunities from the social weaks. Through miseries and failures of individuals, Dreiser testifies and criticizes the miseries and failures of America brought about by industrialization and capitalism. Dreiser was indigant at the social evils and dreamed of a social reform. Through his novels, he strongly insisted that the Americans should return to the stage of the innocent original dream when they did not hurt each other. He did not criticize the corruption of the weak and incapable. Instead, he embraced them in a higher morality of pity and mercy. His novels contain the truths of his times ex- pressed through the proper recognition and the precise criticism of American life attained by his private experiences.;Dreiser는 자신의 작품들을 통해 유물론적 결정론에 입각한 자연주의적 관점에 따라 인간을 자신의 의지가 아닌 환경, 유전, 본능, 우연에 의해 삶이 결정되는 존재로 그리고 있다. 그가 자연주의를 받아들인것은 19세기 중엽부터 시작된 미국의 급격한 사회, 경제, 사상의 변화에 기인한다. Dreiser가 바라본 미국과 미국인은 산업화와 자본주의의 폐해아래 '미국적 순수성'으로 대표되는 기존의 긍정적 가치들을 상실해가고 있었다. 미국사회는 모든가치에 우선한 물질적 힘에 지배되고 있었다. 미국인들의 낙관적 이상주의를 표명했던 '미국의 꿈'은 단지 물질적 성공만을 의미하는것으로 왜소화되어 삶을 불균형하게 만드는 타락의 유혹자로 전락하였다. Dreiser는 왜곡된 가치와 환상을 심어주는 타락한 사회의 힘이 개인의 삶을 결정짓는 요소이며 인간은 이힘을 제어할만한 의지력을 가진 존재가 아니라고 보았다. 그러므로 Dreiser인물들의 고난은 운명적인것이 아니라 사회적 모순에 기인한다. Sister Carrie의 등장인물들은 모두 사회가 심어주는 타락한 가치에 무분별하게 자신을 내던진다. 그들이 세속적으로 성공하건 실패하건 그러한 목표를 쫓는한 인간적 삶의 실패는 필연적이다. An American Tragedy에서 주인공 Clyde는 미국식 성공의 꿈을 맹목적으로 추구하다 배타적이고 잔인한 속성의 사회의 벽에 부딪혀 비극을 맞는다. Dreiser가 보기에 미국사치는 구성원들을 물질적 가치로 유혹하지만 실제로는 사회적 약자들에겐 기회가 박탈된 민주적 정의가 깨어진 부도덕한 사회였다. Dreiser는 개인들의 불행과 실패를 통해 산업화와 자본주의 아래에서의 미국의 불행과 실패를 증언하고 비판한다. Dreiser는 개인을 불행에 빠지게 하는 사회악에 분노하고 개혁을 꿈꾸었다. 그는 미국인이 서로에게 상처와 고통을 주지않는 순수한 최초의 꿈으로 회귀할것을 작품을 통해 강하게 암시한다. 그는 나약하고 무능력한 개인의 도덕적 타락을 비난치 않고 연민과 동정이라는 높은 도덕성으로 포용한다. 그의 작품속엔 경험에서 오는 미국적 삶에 대한 정당한 인식과 온당한 비판에 의해 보여지는 시대진실이 담겨져 있다.
