홍길동전의 구조적 특성 연구

Abstract

「홍길동전」은 최초의 국문소설이라는 문학사적 의의를 갖는 동시에 작가가 알려져 있는 몇 안되는 고대소설중의 하나이다. 이런 이유 때문에 「홍길동전」은 다른 고대소설에 비해 않은 연구성과를 갖고 있다. 이중 構造와 내용분석에 관한 기존의 연구들은 「홍길동전」구조의 統一性을 둘러싸고 많은 논쟁을 전개해 왔다. 즉 많은 기존의 연구들이 「홍길동전」은 구조가 통일되어 있지 않으며 따라서 「홍길동전」 중 율도국 부분은 잘못 첨가된 사족이며 後人들의 첨가 부분이라고 보아 왔다. 따라서 이 논문의 목적은 「홍길동전」에 내재된 구조의 유기적 관련성과 구조와 내용의 조화, 작품 중 율도국이 갖고 있는 기능과 의미를 通過儀禮똘깎적 관점에서 살펴보려는 것이다. Ⅱ장에서는 먼저 구조와 소설과의 관계를 살피고 구조의 통일성과 불통일성에 관한 기존 연구들을 검토해 보았다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 「홍길동전」의 구조를 분석함으로써 두가지 점을 밝혀냈다. 첫째, 「홍길동전」에 나타난 공간이 내용과 유기적 관련성을 갖고 있고 내용 전개상 율도국이라는 공간이 요청된다는 것이다. 둘째, 「홍길동전」에 나타난 공간의 전개와 발전은 통과의례적 구조를 갖고 있으며 각 공간에서의 내용 전개도 또한 통과의례적 구조로 이루어졌다. 따라서 「홍길동전」을 통과의례적 구조로 볼 경우 율도국 부분은 필수불가결한 부분이며, 이러한 구조적 필연성을 전제로 할 경우에는 활빈당을 이유로 주제의 사회성만을 강조하는 주장이나, 율도국을 이유로 사회성을 무시하는 주장 모두를 극복할 수 있는 총체적 결론을 얻을 수 있게 된다. Ⅲ에서는 율도국이 작품 구조에서 갖는 의미를 밝혔다. 이를 위해 율도국이 등장하는 조선의 구체적인 시대 상황과 율도국의 사회 모습을 살펴 보았다. 그리고 율도국이 갖는 작품상에서의 기능과 의미를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 먼저 율도국이 문제해결의 공간임을 밝혀냈다. 그리고 율도국이 당시 사회를 비판하고 구체적인 대안을 제시해주는 곳임을 밝혀냈다. 그러나 율도국이 시대적 한계도 함께 공유하고 있음을 아울러 지적했다. 즉 율도국은 문제해결과 도피라는 이중적 의미를 동시에 간직하고 있는 것이다. 이것이 주제의 핵심이 된다. Ⅳ장에서는 「홍길동전」에 나타나는 구조와 주제의 유기적 연관성을 살펴보았다. 그리고 여기에서는 「홍길동전」의 주제와 구조가 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있으며, 따라서 「홍길동전」의 주제는 구조의 통일성을 바탕으로 해서 파악되어야 한다는 점이 지적되었다. 이러한 논의의 결과로 첫째, 「홍길동전」은 유기적이고 통일된 구조를 이루도 있음이 밝혀졌다. 여기에서 율도국 부분은 구조상으로나 내용상으로나 필수불가결한 부분임이 밝혀졌다. 따라서 활빈당 부분만을 주목하는 연구태도는 지양되어야 하며 율도국 부분 역시 같은 비중으로 검토되어야 작품을 총체적으로 파악할 수 있다. 둘째, 율도국은 가정과 사회에서 제기된 모든 문제가 해결된 공간으로 조선의 모순이 극복된 곳이다. 이와 같이 율도국은 현실비판의 기능과 함께 조선이 궁극적으로 어떤 모습을 지녀야 하는가를 보여주는 대안의 역할을 수행한다. 그러나 17C 조선사회에서 창작된 만큼 시대적 한계를 아울러 내포하고 있다. 이러한 율도국 부분은 구조의 통일성에 필수불가결한 주제를 보다 정확하게 드러내는데 이바지하고 있다.;Hong Kil Dong Cheon(洪吉童傳) has a special meaning in the history of literature, that isi it is the first novel written in Korean language. And it is one of several novels that are known by their authors. Because of these facts, Hong Kil Dong Cheon has much more study results than any other classical novels. Especially, students who have researched on the structure and contents of Hong Kil Dong Cheon have discussed the unify of its structure. Many students have judged that the structure of Hong Kil Dong Cheon is not unified, so the part of 'You Do Kook'(율도국) is the useless and superfluous part which decendents added. My purpose in this study is to clarify the organic structure which is intrinsic in Hong Kil Dong Cheon, the harmony between its structure and contents, and the function and meaning of the part of 'Yul Do Kook' from the 'passage rites' point of view. In chapter two, I studied the relation of structure and novel and the established opinions that its structure is unified or that it is not unified. And I analyzed the structure of Hog Kil dog Cheon on the basis of these established researches, so l found two important facts. First, the spaces in Hong Kil Dong Cheon has the organic relationship with the whole contents and especially the part of 'Yul Do Kook' is necessary in the process of the story. Second, the process and development of Hong Kil Dong Cheon in this work have the meaning of passage rites, and the process of the whole contents in each part has the structure of passage rites, too. So when we decide that Hong Kil Dong Cheon has the structure of passage rites, we have to determine that the part of 'Yul Do Kook' is essential. And if we premise such a passage-rites-structure, we will get the general conclusion that can overcome the limited opinions ; the opinion that stresses the social theme on the basis of 'Whal Bin Dang'(活貧堂) and the opinion that ignores the social theme on the basis of the part of 'Yul Do Kook'. In chapter three, I clarified the meaning of 'Yul Do Kook' in the structure. And with this purpose, I researched on the concrete phases of Chosen Dynasty(朝鮮王朝) period, the social phases of Yul Do Kook and the function and meaning of Yul Do Kook in Hong Kil Dong Cheon. In chapter four, I studied the organic relations between the theme and the structure in Hong Kil Dong Cheon. To be concrete, I clarified that the structure and the theme in this work are closely connected with each other and that its theme has to be understood on the basis of its unified structure. On these premises, I proved that 'Yul Do Kook' is the essential part, that is, it is the fictional place which performas the function to criticize the problems in the society of Chosen Dynasty and to suggest the concrete solutions. But I indicated that Yul Do Kook has its own limitations, tool and that the limitations are ones of the society of Chosen Dynasty. So to speak, it is the essential theme that Yul Do Kook has double meanings that 'Yul Do Kook' itself suggest the solutions of the problems in the society of Chosen Dynasty and at the same time escape the essential contradictions. As first result, I got the conclusion that Hong Kil Dong Cheon has the organic and unified structure and that the· part of Yul Do Kook is essential in the structure and contents. So we have to keep away from the attitude to take too much serious view of the part of 'Whal Bin Dang', only. And if we want to understand this work on the whole, we have to have the close researches on the part of Yul Do Kook, too. Second, Yul Do Kook is the ideal place in which so many social and domestic problems are solved and the contradictions in Chosen Dynasty are overcome. So 'Yul Do Kook' has the function to criticize many social problems in Chosen Dynasty and shows the ideal state to which Chosen Dynasty has to intend. But Hong Kil Dong Cheon involves a few limitations because it is created in the society of Chosen Dynasty in the seventeenth century. In conclusion, the part of 'Yul Do Kook' shows the essential theme in Hong Kil Dong Cheon more specifically and contributes to the unified structure of Hong Kil Dong Cheon.
