Shakespeare의 As You Like It와 Twelfth Night 비교연구

Abstract

As You Like It와 Twelfth Night는 Shakespeare의 'Festive Comedies' 가운데서 마지막 두 작품들이며, 다른 모든 festive comedies가 가지고 있는 중요한 특징들을 다루고 있다. As You Like It에서 인물들은 일상의 세계를 상징하는 궁전(court)으로부터 벗어나서 축제의 분위기로 지배되는 Arden 숲으로 간다. 그 곳은 궁전을 지배하던 무자비한 운명으로부터 벗어난 곳이다. Arden 숲의 유쾌한 자유 속에서, 연인들은 "자신들이 원하는 대로" 사랑을 얻으며, 광대들은 풍자와 조롱의 말을 할 수 있다. 이 곳은 서로 대비되는 여러 요소들이 모두 동등하게 인정받고 포용되는 이상적인 세계이다. 연인들의 사랑과 결혼도 Hymen을 중심으로 한 결혼식에서 완성되고, 동시에 그들은 다시 찾은 사회적 지위를 가지고 궁전의 세계로 돌아올 것을 약속한다. As You Like It의 낭만적인 축제의 분위기와는 달리 Twelfth Night에서 Shakespeare는 축제의 종말을 다루고 있다. 유쾌한 술잔치를 벌이던 Sir Toby 일행의 축제 정신은 청교도 같은 Malvolio와 충돌한다. 이들은 Malvolio를 축제의 희생양으로 삼는다. 그러나 이들의 지나친 축제 분위기의 양상은 드디어 폭력을 낳고 Sir Toby의 술잔치는 종말을 맞이하며 그들은 일상의 세계로 돌아간다. Illyria의 사람들은 그들의 지나친 장난과 Viola의 변장으로 고통 받는다. 그러나 복잡한 오해와 의혹은 Sebastian의 등장으로 해결되며 그들은 가까운 장래에 결혼할 것을 약속한다. Twelfth Night의 결말에는 춤이나 결혼식은 없다. 다만 Illyria의 연인들과는 대조적으로 Feste가 홀로 무대에서 노래 부를 뿐이다. 그는 Illyia로부터 날마다 비 오는 일상의 현실로 우리를 불러들인다. Shakespeare는 As You Like It와 Twelfth Night에서 축제의 본질과 한계를 가루고 있는 것이다.;As You Like It and Twelfth Night are the last two plays of Shakespeare's festive comedies. They deal with characteristic features which every other festive comedies also deal with. In As You Like It, people escape from Duke Frederick's court which represents everyday world and go to the forest of Arden, where everybody is out of the reach of the Fortune of the court and is in the festive mood. In the civilized liberty of the forest of Arden, young lovers achieve their love and the clowns, Touchstone and Jaques, are allowed to mock and satirize everything including the values of the court and that of the forest. The forest of Arden is the ideal place where many contrasting elements are approved equally. Hymen, the god of marriage, marries four couples in the end and these couples promise themselves to return to the court, the everyday world, with their regained fortune. In As You Like It, people are in perfect harmony and many contradictions are reconciled in this festive mood, but Twelfth Night deals with the limitations of revelry. The festive spirit of Sir Toby conflicts with the Puritan-like qualities of Malvolio. The revellers gull Malvolio completely and he becomes a scapegoat of their festivity. But Sir Toby's pursuit of a jest leads him into madness, which turns into anger, and violence. So his revel comes to an end and the revellers get back to the everyday life. Lovers in Illyria are involved in the revellers' excessive mischief and are decieved by Viola's disguise. They suffer for their misapprehensions and delusions. But the moment their misunderstandings turn into anger or violence, Sebastian, Viola's twin brother, enters and clears the misapprehensions. Orsino pronounces marriage in the near future but there is no dance, no wedding ceremony as As You Like It. There is only sharp contrast between the lovers who seem to be remaining as lovers forever in Illyria and Feste who alone remains on stage and sings his song. His song summons us from Illyria to the real world where each day could be rainy and windy. Shakespeare deals with the nature of festivity and at the same time its limitations in As You Like It and Twelfth Night.
