(The) Great Gatsby와 Tender Is The Night 연구

Abstract

Fitzgerald, representing the Jazz Ate illuminate his generation in The Great Gatsby and Tender Is The Night. In particular he criticizes the society by describing the process in which ideal people fall to ruin in the corrupted society. In The Great Gatsby, it appears that the society of east in the 1920's does not present the object which corresponds to the dream of Gatsby, the successor to the purest form of american dream. Furthermore Gatsby falls to ruin by the malice of Daisy's class, the object of his dream. Therefore it becomes clear that life directed towards east is mistake. But Fitzgerald suggests an alternative to the chaotic society through Nick who doesn't cast away the hope of the society by taking a cheerful view of Gatsby's dream. In Tender Is The Night, the society is more degenerated than the former. Dick, eager to live life different from the others, tries remedy the unhealthy effects of modern society as represented by Nicole. But he becomes de- graded himself in the process and only suffers series of falsehood and corruption. Moreover his only role was to take a part in the history corrupted by disorder and the quality of his dream precious in that society, changes. Through these two works, Fitzgerald watches the collapse of his age. And through Nick, Fitzgerald portrays that the rebirth of that first American ideal and the attempt to realize that ideal in life is the only way towards reconstruction in that corrupted situation.;Jazz age를 대표하는 작가인 Fitzgerald는 The Great Gatsby와 Tender Is The Night을 통하여 자신의 시대를 조명하고 있다. 그는 특히 타락한 사회 속에서 이상을 지녔던 사람이 파멸하게 되는 과정을 그려나감으로써 그 사회를 비판하는 것이다. The Great Gatsby 에서는 1920년대 동부 사회가 미국의 꿈의 가장 순수한 형태의 계승자인 Gatsby의 꿈에 상응할 만한 대상을 제시해주지 못하고 있음이 드러난다. 더우기 그 꿈의 대상인 Daisy 계급의 악의에 의해 Gatsby는 파멸되는 것이다. 그럼으로써 동부를 지향하는 1920년대의 삶의 방향 자체가 잘못되었음이 명백해지는 것이다. 그러나 Fitzgerald는 Nick을 통해 그 무절제해져 가는 사회에 대한 대안을 제시하고 Gatsby의 꿈을 긍정해 보임으로써 미국 사회에 대한 희망을 버리지 않는다. Tender Is The Night에서는 보다 더 퇴폐적으로 변모된 사회 속에서 남과는 다른 삶을 살아보고자 갈망하는 Dick가 Nicole로서 대변되어지는 현대 사회의 병폐를 치유코자 한다. 그러나 그 과정에서 오히려 그 자신이 사회에 오염되고 일련의 허위와 타락을 겪게 될 뿐이다. 더우기 그의 역할은 무질서로 향해 가는 역사에 일익을 담당했을 뿐임이 드러나게 되어 그 사회 속에서는 진귀했던 그의 꿈조차 변질되어 버리는 것이다. Fitzgerald는 두 작품을 통해 Jazz Age라는 한 시대의 몰락을 끝까지 응시해 본 것이다. 그리고 그 상황에서 다시 시작하기 위해서는, 최초의 미국의 이상을 부활시켜 그 정신에 따라 현실을 살아야 함을 Nick을 통해 보여주고 있다.
