Abstract

Henry Vaughan은 자신의 종교체험을 바탕으로 인간의 삶과 죽음에 관해 깊이 인식하고, 신(God)과의 영적인 교류를 통해 궁극의 인간 구원을 이루고자 한 17세기 종교시인이다. Henry Vaughan의 종교시집 Silex Scintillans는 그의 영적인 변화과정이 온전히 나타나는 '영적고투의 기록서'로서 신과의 합일을 통해 이루는 인간영혼의 재생과 구원의 문제가 그 주제로 드러난다. Vaughan의 종교시를 문학적 가치가 뛰어난 시로서 형상화시킨 그 시적기법은 풍부하고 다양한 심상을 통해 나타난다. 복합적이고 유기적인 관련을 맺는 심상들은 시인의 종교체험을 바탕으로 하는 시적주제를 적절히 표현하며, 시집을 하나의 '통일된 전체'로 만들어 준다. His conversion makes Vaughan produce Silex Scintillans. The achievement of Silex Scintillans is quite enough to secure his place as poet among the most attractive of English poetry. Henry Vaughan's divine poems, Silex Scintillans, are the records of spiritual struggle which express his own spiritual progress. The themes of his poetry are the problem of salvation and regeneration of human soul through the Union with God. Henry Vaughan's divine poems have a quality which expresses the distinctive touch of his own religious experience. This quality is the use of imagery which connects organically between recurrent image-clusters. It certainly helps to make his collection of poems "a unified whole". The purpose of this study is to analyze concrete imagery which expresses the stages of Vaughan's spiritual development. His poems are divided into three groups-Divine Seed, Pilgrimage, Circle. At first, Vaughan's imagery of Divine Seed expresses the stage of spiritual awakening, and the seed appears to symbolize "a Divine element innate to the soul." It is possibility of Salvation through the Union with God. Second, Pilgrimage's imagery expresses the stage of spiritual purgation, it appears to discipline his spirit in order to achieve commerce with God. Lastly, Vaughan's imagery of Circle expresses the stage of ultimate spiritual illumination. The Circle of perfection appears to describe the Union with God through the redemptive grace of Crist, and the circular motion of the heavenly bodies expresses the perfection of God's creation. Despite the poetry of Vaughan's debt to George Herbert, Henry Vaughan added the distinctive touch of his own mystic color to the traditional Christian belief. It apparents in his extraordinary sense of the Presence of God in nature. Conclusively, Henry Vaughan is one of the most serious poets seeking the salvation of human soul through the communion with God, seeking the harmonious unity with man and Universe.
