Shaw의 역사의식에 나타난 창조적 진화사상

Abstract

George Bernard Shaw는 사실주의 극 정신의 의미를 영국 극계에 도입함으로써 침체되어 있던 19제기의 영국 극계에 새로운 가능성을 제시해 준 작가이다. Shaw는 관객의 관습적 감상에만 호소하는 순간적인 오락의 한계성을 극복하고, 관객들에게 유용성을 전달할 수 있는 차원의 새로운 신극 운동을 구상하게 된다. 이러한 시도는 지성적 사유를 통한 사실규명과 창조적 이념의 제시를 강조하는 것이다. 이러한 Shaw의 자세는 삶의 사실들을 있는 그대도 꿰뚫어 보고 현실의 추한 모습까지도 관객들로 하여금 직면하게 함으로써 그러한 현실을 개혁하고자 하는 의지를 갖게 하는 역할을 수행하게 된다. Shaw의 극작에 있어서 이러한 역할을 수행하는 사상은 창조적 진화사상으로 집약된다. 이것은 인간의 거듭남에 대한 확신을 견지하는 사상이다. 즉 생명체의 창조적 진화를 의도하는 우주에 내재된 신성한 목적을 전 인류가 인식함으로써 인류의 창조적인 미래를 위하여 매진하고자 하는 의지를 지닐 수 있게 되었을 때 사회개혁은 이루어지게 된다는 것이다. 이러한 Shaw의 창조적 진화사상은 그의 전 작품을 통하여 제시되고 있다. 그러나 역사극인 Saint Joan을 통해서는 이러한 그의 이론이 실제의 역사적 상황 속에서 시험됨으로써 그 실현 가능성의 여부가 제시된다. 즉 역사상의 위대한 인물들에게서 창조적 진화의지를 지니고 그것을 실현할 수 있었던 실례를 찾을 수 있게 된 것이다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 Shaw의 극작에 있어서 창조적 진화사상이 형성되기까지의 과정과 그러한 사상이 역사극인 Saint Joan을 통해서 어떤 의미로 제시되었는지를 밝히고자 한다.;The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Shaw's Idea of Creative Evolution in his history play, Saint Joan. George Bernard Shaw introduced the meaning of Realism to the 19th century English theatre. In those days melodrama which appealed to audience's sentimentality was prevailed. On the other hand, it was also the period of great change: in politics, religion, science and morality. In spite of the increase of audience, the theatre was indifferent from the human problems caused by these great changes. In this situation Shaw intended to convey the reform idea through his plays. He tried to improve human condition by the betterment of morality in order to accomplish this purpose. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of this idea in his plays. This idea brought the existing thought of audience into collision with one another, hence caused the conflict and contributed to the development of the audience both intellectually and spiritually. This intention was integrated in the Creative Evolution Idea. It was the belief in human rebirth. It emphasized the human will to reform his condition for desirable future by control himself to become a higher being. The idea was expressed throughout his works. In Man and Superman and Back to Methuselah this idea was presented only theoretically. In his history plays, however, the possibility of the realization of the Evolution Idea was tested in the real historical situation. He found the model of Superman in the Treat man of the real history. In this respect the history play, Saint Joan is the most important work which synthesized his evolution idea and the possibility of its realization in the history.
