William Blake의 시를 통해 본 속박의 양상과 삶의 비젼

Abstract

William Blake는 상상력(Imagination)을 통해 인간의 영혼을 계몽하고자 했으며, 이를 위해 'Two Contrary States'를 제시한다. 그 중 Innocence는 'inexperience'의 의미를 지니며, Experience는 지식의 상태를 의미한다. 본 고에서는, The Songs of Experience를 통하여, 인간의 순수한 삶이 내적인 억압과 외적인 억압으로 인해 파괴되고 속박당하는 모습을 보여준다. Blake에게 중요한 것은, '창조적인 상상력 ' (Creative Imagination)을 통한 행동적인 삶이었기 때문에, 그는 비전(vision) 대신 오감(five senses)에 의존했던 경험주의자들에 대해 경멸을 보이고 있다. 그는 경험적 이론에 따른 속임수, 위선, 이기주의가 인간의 영혼속으로 들어가, 'Innocence'의 상태를 파괴시킨다고 보았기 때문이다. 그것은 Blake에게 정신적인 죽음(spiritual death)의 상태이자 속박의 상태를 의미한다. 그러나 인간의 타락(fall)은, 영원(eternity)에 도달하기 위한 필수적인 여건이라는 점에서 긍정적인 가치를 지닌다. Blake는 'with the eye'가 아닌 'through the eye'의 인식상태속에서, 상상력을 가지고 사물들을 명확히 바라다 보았던 시인이기 때문이다. 영원세계에서의 창조적인 삶의 모습은, 예언시에서 소극적 자유와 적극적 자유를 통한 비전으로 나타난다. 그 중 적극적 자유로 인도하는 상상력(Imagination)은, 경험의 사슬로부터 인간을 구원해준다는 점에서 '구원자' (the Saviour)라고 불리운다. 그런 상상력의 토대위에서 Blake가 제시하는 새로운 생명 즉, 기독교 정신은, 자기억제가 아닌 자유와 용서를 포함하는 사랑(love)인 것이다. 그러한 사랑과 용서를 통하여, 인류는 잃었던 영혼인 'Jerusalem'을 다시 찾게 된다.;William Blake has set out to enlighten us about the soul of man, and to do this he gives us a living realization of its "Two Contrary States". There is no question of Blake at any time using the word Innocence in the sense of inexperience, or Experience as a state of knowledge of any kind. The State of Experience shows how life makes objection to and corrupts and destroys it. Because for him the primary reality and the only thing that matters is the active life of the creative imagination, he has only contempt for empiricist philosphers who build their systems on sense-perceptions instead of on vision. When their theory restrict the creative forces, knavery, hypocrisy, and self-seeking enter into the soul, and the state of innocence is lost. To Blake, it means a state of forgetfulness and illusion, of spiritual death. But the Fall is necessary step to lead men to Eternity. Because Blake is the only poet who sees all temporal things under the form of eternity, he catches the clear outlines of what he sees with the imagination through the eye not with it. Imagination is called 'the Saviour' because it alone can release humanity from the prisons of experience. He defines Christianity on the base of Imagination. The message of Christ, the new life he gives, is not self-restraint but love which is freedom and forgiveness. Therefore, according to Blake, mankind may ascend to Eternity through the power of Jesus teaching the Christianity.
