(The) Scarlet Letter와 The Blithedale Romance에 나타난 구원의 공동체

Abstract

This is a thesis on Nathaniel Hawthorne's evaluation of attempts made by Americans towards an ideal community as expressed in his novels, The Scarlet Letter and The Blithedale Romance. In The Scarlet Letter, the inner conflicts that the 17th century Puritans who had dream of building an ideal religious community had confronted in the New Continent are examined through the analysis of the community's spiritual leader, Reverend Dimmesdale's conflicts. With the realization that man, even at his best, is only a being of good and evil, Dimmesdale gains a new vision which signified the beginning of a bright dawn in New England. In The Blithedale Romance, the Blithedale experimental community movement attempted by the 19th century americans to overcome the void of urbanization and market-economy system is examined. The efforts made by Blithedalers who had believed in the possibility of building a community of universal brotherhood among members with agricultural labor as its economic foundation fail due to their infidelities to the community's own high ideals. However, despite the failure of the Blithedale experiment, the initial spirit, which sands out in comparison to the real situation of the Boston society and to Coverdale's meaningless life, should be highly valued. Thus, by evaluating the efforts made by Americans to build a redemptive community in the 17th and 19th centuries, Hawthorne was fiercely condemning Americans who had prided themselves to be the reborn men it the New Continent. The significance of Dimmesdale's self-awareness and confession lies in that it provides a vision from which an ideal community, in the true sense, could be built.;본 논문에서는 Nathaniel Hawthorne의 장편 The Scarlet Letter와 The Blithedale Romance를 중심으로 미국인들이 새로운 대륙에서 이상적인 공동체를 세워 보려는 노력들을 작가가 어떻게 가치평가하고 있는지를 알아보고자 한다. The Scarlet Letter에서는 종교적인 이상사회를 꿈꾸었던 17세기 청교도들이 신대륙에서 당면한 문제를, 공동체의 정신적인 지도자인 Dimmesdale목사의 고뇌와 갈등을 통하여 살펴보았다. 인간이 최선의 상태에서도 선·악이 혼합된 존재라는 깨달음을 통하여 획득된 Dimmesdale의 새로운 비전은 New England의 진정한 새벽을 여는 시작을 의미한다. The Scarlet Letter에서는 19세기 미국인들이 도시화와 시장경제체제의 해악을 극복하기 위하여 시도되는 Blithedale 실험적 공동체 운동의 과정과 의의를 살펴보았다. Blithedaler들은 자연 속에서의 정직한 노동이라고 여겨진 농업을 경제적 기반으로 하여 구성원들이 형제·자매처럼 사이좋게 지낼 수 있는 공동체를 꿈꾸었다. 그러나 현실 속에서 그들은 자신들의 최초의 정신에 성실하지 못하게 행동함으로써 Blithedale실험을 실패로 이끈다. Blithedale실험이 이렇게 실패로 끝났음에도 불구하고, Boston사회의 실상과 중년이 되어 과거를 회상하는 Coverdale의 공허한 삶에 대비되어, Blithedale이 내세웠던 최초의 정신은 가치있는 것으로 부각된다. Hawthorne은 17세기와 19세기를 시대적 배경으로 하여, 각 시대의 구원의 공동체를 세우려던 미국인들의 노력을 가치평가 함으로써, 새로운 대륙에서 새로운 사람이 되었노라고 자만하는 19세기 미국인들의 안이한 자만심에 통렬한 비판을 가하고 있다. 동시에, 작가는 Dimmesdale이 인간의 한계를 깨닫게 되는 자각을 New England의 영광된 미래로 연결시킴으로써, 진정한 의미의 공동사회로서의 미국에 대한 희망을 표현한다.
