玄鎭健小說의 構造硏究

Abstract

Hyun Jin-Gun is one of the most representative among the novelists who wrote short stories in 1920's, when the modern literature of Korea got started under the rule of Japanese colonization of Korea. Thus, Hyun's works have been studied and analysed by many critics and theorists. In general, they have been pointing out the artistic and realistic techniques as Hyun's characteristics. This thesis employed the semiotical method of critique in order to analyse some of Hyun Jin-Gun's works from a new angle of view. The semiotics made its first start as a new method of reading rather than as that of critique of literary works. Roland Barthes' book, S/Z, however, contributed to the establishment of semiotics as a method of critique, exploiting five code; that is, (1) code of actions (ACT): to express acts, (2) hermeneutic doe (HER): to arouse curiosity in the proceeding of events, (3) code of seme (SEM; a seme is the unit of signifier): to signify special connotations of words, (4) symbolic code (SYM): to represent symbols, and (5) reference code (REF): to allude to references or associated cultures. Codes (1) and (2) have mainly to do with the plot; (3) and (4), with the subject. In Chapter Ⅰ, I analysed one of Hyun's works, 'A Fortunate Day', in some detail, utilizing the five codes mentioned above. The five codes form a fine network of meaning in this work. Especially, the effective use of codes HER and SYM was a salient feature of the work. The clear emergence of HER code indicated that the work had a structure of irony. I could devide Hyun's works into two groups by investigating which SYM code was used: antitheses SYM code or monothesis SYM code. 'A Fortunate Day' was a case of antitheses SYM code. Other cases of antitheses SYM code were found in 'Offering Liquors' and 'Hoodwinking'. By the way, when ACT code were developed elaborately and thoroughly, the antitheses converged into one point (e.g. 'A Fortunate Day'); when ACT code were simplist, the antitheses recur many times without converging into one point (e.g. 'Offering Liquors' and 'Hoodwinking'). On the other hand, the works which used monothesis SYM code, for example, 'The Head of a Private Mental Hospital' and 'The Native Country', adopted and developed a single theme. This thesis dealt with Hyun's works by the five codes mentioned above, concluding that the meaning of novels came from the close association of words used.;玄 鎭健은 그가 活動한 時代의 祉會的, 文學史的 특수성과 더불어 중요시되어온 人物 중의 하나이다. 따라서 그의 文學史的 位置와 더불어 그의 作品에 대한 연구는 活潑하게 이루어지고 있다. 本 論文에서는 그러한 硏究에 즈음하여 또 다른 시선으로 玄 鎭建의 作品을 바라보고자 시도되어졌다. 따라서 그의 作品을, 文學作品을 하나의 커다란 略號로 보고 이를 해독해 나가는 文學硏究方法으로써 記號學을 採擇하여 적용시켜보았다. 따라서 Ⅰ장에서는 記號學이란 무엇이며 또 이를 文學作品에 구체적으로 적용시킬 때 그 실제방법으로써 사용되는 5개의 略號는 무엇인가를 설명하였다. Ⅱ장에서는 玄 鎭健의 諸作品中 임의로 ＜운수 좋은 날＞을 선택하여 分析했다. 이 作品에서, 롤랑 바르뜨(Roland Barthes)가 제시한 5개의 略號一行動, 해석, 의미, 文化, 상징-가 정밀하게 얽혀있음을 알 수 있었다. 특히 이 作品에서 나타난 해석의 略號의 탁월한 사용은 玄 鎭健이 무엇보다도 단편소설의 구조에 뛰어난 作家임을 보여 주었다. 한편, 그는 상징의 略號를 獨創的으로 사용하였다. 즉 다양하고 복잡한 상징보다는 단일, 혹은 대립적 상징을 적절하게 사용하였다. Ⅲ장에서는 ＜운수 좋은 날＞의 分析을 모델로 하여 玄 鎭健의 4 作品, ＜술 權하는 社會＞＜까막잡기＞＜私立精神病院長＞＜故鄕＞을 分析하였다. 특히 이들 作品은 그 特徵으로써 상징의 略號가 대립과 단일로써 區分되어졌고 이에 따라 소설의 構造와 主題가 나뉘어짐을 알 수 있었다. 대립 상징을 사용한 作品으로 ＜운수 좋은 날＞과 ＜술 權하는 社會＞, ＜까막잡기＞가 있다. 단일 상징 作品엔셋 ＜私立精神病院長＞과 ＜故鄕＞이 있었는데, 이는 단일 상징의 略號가 곧 主題로 심화되었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 以上에서 살펴보았듯이, 玄鎭健의 作品構造는 대개 사건을 위주로 하여 치밀한 얽힘을 보여주었고 그때에는 독자에게 뛰어난 감동을 주었다. 그러나 사건 전개가 중심이기 보다 ＜故鄕＞과 같이 사건이 거의 없을 경우는 메시지의 노출이 현저하여 소설적인 감동이 부족하였다. 이는 곧 玄鎭健의 作品이 그 構造에 있어서 精的이기 보다는 動的이라는 것을 시사했다. 또 그러한 경우에 작품의 우수성이 잘 드러남을 알 수 있었다.
