(The) American과 The Ambassadors를 통해서 본 국제상황주제의 전개

Abstract

Henry James문학의 기조를 이루는 것은 신,구대륙의 이질적인 문화가 야기하는 여러가지 대비를 취급한, 소위 국제상황주제 (International Theme) 라고 할 수 있다. 이같은 주제는, 감수성이 예민한 주인공이 문화가 없는 미국에 만족하지 못하고 유럽의 미와 전통 속에서 자신을 풍성케 하지만, 동시에 유럽 전통의 배경 속에 숨어있는 악을 체험하고 고국으로 돌아오는 기본형식으로 전개된다. 그런데 작가의 문학세계가 성숙함에 따라, 국제상황주제는 다른 양상을 띄기 시작한다. 초기의 James는 유럽의 행동양식이나 도덕에 적응할 수 없는 미국의 가치관을 보이면서, 순진한 미국인을 지지한다. 그러나 후기에는 유럽과 미국이라는 지역적 대비차익을 탈피하여, 서로 다른 인간의 이상과 기질의 갈등을 제시하는 것이다 따라서, 국제상황주제의 The American과 The Ambassadors를 살펴 보는 것은 의미있는 작업이라고 하겠다. The American의 주제는 두 문화의 단순한 대비로, 미국은 선한 양심, 개방성, 자유정신과 심미안의 결핍, 물질주의를 대표하며, 반면에 유럽은 탐욕, 잔인성, 예술과 문화의 세계를 상징한다. 그런데 이러한 두 세계는 결코 타협할 수 없는 것으로 나타난다. 그러나 The Ambassadors의 촛점은 두 사회가 아니라, Lambert Strether라는 개인이며, 따라서 문화의 대조는 주인공의 성장과정을 보이기 위해 제시된다. Strether는 일련의 경험을 통해 대립되던 가치관-미국의 청교도적인 삶과 유럽의 자유롭고 감각적인 삶 을 새로운 도덕관으로 통합하며, 삶에 대한 통찰력을 얻게 되는 것이다. 새로운 도덕관이란, Mme. Vionnet이 부도덕한 육체적 관계를 가졌음에도 불구하고, Chad에 대한 희생과 헌신 때문에 그녀를 순결하다고 결론 짓는 것을 말한다. 이같은 도덕관을 세울 때, Strether는 '어떻게 살아야 하는가'하는 문제에 답할 수 있다. 즉 여러형태의 삶에 직접 참여하는 것 보다, 그러한 삶에 대한 통찰력을 지님으로써 주위의 사람들을 이해하고 동조하는 것이 이상적인 삶인 것이다. James가 구체적인 Newman의 문제를 떠나 삶의 주제를 다룰 때, 필연적으로 그 주제는 보편적인 문제로 승화되는 전개를 보여준다.;Henry James is concerned about the radical opposition of the American and European way of taking life, the International Theme. As Henry James's moral vision gets enriched , the International Theme tends to take on a different aspect. In his earlier novels, the conflicts are to be presented in terms of European manners and morals at odds with American ones. But there are antagonisms of ideals and temperaments that may occur anywhere in his later novels. That is to say, later it becomes such a medium for him as the sea was a medium for Melville and Conrad. Therefore, it is meaningful in realizing the progressive change of the International Theme to compare The American and The Ambassador which are of the similar theme. Since James's idea of The American is derived from "cruelly wronged compatriot", it is understood that the contrast per se between the American and European culture becomes the theme of the novel. While the American represents good conscience, spontaniety, ignorant aesthetic sense, the European shows cruelty, greedings, art and culture. In The American, the hero's experiences are used to illustrate the contrast between the two civilizations. And so his hero does not attempt to see in the foreground of European social manners the decadence and evil. He is satisfied with the recognition that two civilizations are incompatible. Therefore Newman never actually gets "educated". But in The Ambassadors, the contrast between America and France becomes the instrument which illustrates the berets "education". Henry James's concern is no longer contrast but "how to live". When he resolves the meaning of life, Lambert Strether can establish new moral system. Unlike the Puritans, he doesn't regard sex as sin. Neither supports he the European moral in which sex is not concerned with moral. But he is obeying a higher morality that constancy and gratitude override the immorality of sexual love. Although Mme. Vionnet commits adultery, her devotion and sacrifice for Chad can forgive her crime. In this novel, the ideal Life is not to participate in but to see, to feel and to understand the world and people. Strether no longer lives the life of duty and conscience, nor of Chad's passion and intimacy. Strether grows in wisdom and understanding of variety of life - the visiion of "how to live"-Therefore, it is Strether who lives the true life. When Henry James treats such a theme, the problem of Newman which is how to respond to Europe as an American, is developed into a universal theme - how to respond to life as a man - .
