중세 수도원 도서관에 관한 연구

Abstract

현대 사회를 일컬어 "정보의 홍수 시대" 혹은 "지식 폭발시대"라고 말한다. 이에 따라 사회 발전에, 나아가서는 국가발전에 필요한 정보를 제공해 주는 역할을 담당하는 도서관의 필요성이 점점 더 증대되고 있다. 그런데 원래 도서관의 보급은 중세의 많은 "종교 교단" 및 수도사원에서 "부속 기관"으로서 도서관을 설치한 것에서 비롯된다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 이러한 기독교 수도원 도서관은 시초라는 의의 뿐 아니라, 중세 암흑시대에서 자료를 보존해 주고 또 복사해서 후세에 남기는데 큰 역할을 했다는 의미도 지니고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 도서관 발전에 기반이 된 수도원 도서관에 대해서 연구해 보았는데, 연구 내용은 첫째, 중세의 시대적 배경과 중세 사회 문화가 도서관 발달에 미친 영향을 살펴 보았다. 둘째, 수도원 도서관의 설립 과정에서 부터 쇠퇴되어질 때 까지의 발전 상황을 살펴보고, Italy · France · Germany · England, Ireland 각 나라 수도원 도서관 발전의 특색을 알아보고 그 역사적 의의에 대해서 고찰해 보았다. 셋째, 수도원 도서관의 특성을 알아보고, 특히 도서관 발전에 큰 공헌을 한 사서승 혹은 사서 수도승들의 의무에 대해서 또한 중세 뿐 아니라 고대의 사본까지도 보존하게 할 수 있었던 서사실에 대해서 정리해 보았다. 넷째, 중세 도서관의 전반적인 경영실태와 도서의 역사에 가장 혁신적인 변화를 일으킨 종이와, 그당시 도서 무역이 어떻게 이루어졌으며, 도서의 가격은 어느정도 였나를 살펴 보았다. 결국 모든 문명이 파괴 당하고 쇠퇴했을 때 어려운 여건 속에서도 고대 문화를 간직하고 독자적인 문화를 형성하여 후세에 전달해주는 중계 역할을 담당한 것이 수도원 도서관의 의의라 생각되어 진다.;Contemporary society may be characterized as information age or "the period of knowledge explosion." On account of this the role of the library in furnishing needed information for the development of society and the nation has increased greatly. Furthermore, the diffision of the original library can be seen to have started from libraries founded reiligious bodies and monasteries in the Middle Ages. Also these kinds of Christian monastic libraries were not only first, but in the Dark Ages of Medieval times they also had important role of preserving docu-mets and copying them for the heritage of future generations. So in the study the development of the library which originated with the Medieval monastic library has been studied. First, the influence the society, culture and background of the Medieval Period had on the growth of the library. Second, as the development of the monastic library from the time of its establishment to its decline was researched, the special features and historical meaning of the growth of the monastic libraries in Italy, France, Germany, England and Ireland were investigated. Third, as the researcher learned the special features of the monastic library, especially the contribution of armarius or the duty of the monastic librarian in the library's development the scriptorium, which also preserved texts not only from the Medieval Period, but also from ancient times, was studied. Fourth, this research dealt with general library administration and the library's history during the Medieval Period and considered how tremendous changes came about in paper and book trade of that period and even what the price of books was. In conclusion, the researcher came to believe that the meaning of the monastic library has found in its mediating role, through the formation of characteristic culture and the preservation of ancient culture in a time when all culture was being destroyed and was declining.
