Shelly와 Keats 비교연구

Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to describe the difference between the ideal and the beauty Shelley and Keats pursued by examining their poetic world. During their short lives, both Shelley and Keats admired the world of beauty with passion while suffering from the conflict existing between the ideal and the reality. Each of them pursued ideal and beauty based on the reality he experienced. Shelley tried to free himself from the sufferings coming from the reality and the oppressive social institutions, and at the same time he longed for the eternal world of ideal and the apocalyptic utopia, which he wrote in his poetry. As the beauty he pursued is a metaphysical object which our senses cannot discern, his poetry is characterized by predominance of the abstract images emphasizing invisibility. Though Keats lived a painful and tiresome life, his keen sense of beauty enabled him to overcome the limitation which the reality and the life were inevitably to bring about and to come up to the higher level of eternity. Realizing the falsities of ideal excluding reality, Keats sought for the means to achieve ideal through reality. He tried to find beauty in all aspects of life with the receptive attitude, and perceived the beauty of concrete objects by instinct. Sensual images are abundent in Keats's poetry, and his command of visual and tactual images is particularly characteristic. On conclusion each of these two poets pursued beauty in his own way, but they had in common the humanitarian intention and purpose to elevate the human soul and to alleviate human sufferings.;Shelley와 Keats는 짧은 생애동안 이상과 현실의 갈등을 겪고, 순수한 열정으로 아름다움을 동경하였던 낭만주의 시인들이다. 두시인은 그들이 경험한 현실을 바탕으로 각기 독특한 이상과 아름다움을 추구하였다. 본고는 Shelley와 Keats의 시세계를 고찰함으로써 그들이 추구하였던 이상과 아름다움의 상이점을 규정하고자 한다. 현상세계와, 제도에 의해 억압받는 현실로부터 벗어나고자 하였던 Shelley는 현상을 초월한 완벽하고 영원한 '이상'과 묵시록적인 이상향을 갈망하였고, 이러한 이상적인 상태의 아름다움을 시에서 구현하였다. 그의 아름다움은 감각적 인식영역을 초월한 형이상학적인 대상이므로 Shelley의 시에는 불가시성(不可視性)을 강조하는 심상과 추상적인 심상이 두드러진다. 고통스럽고 피곤한 삶에 밀착된 일생을 보냈던 Keats는 인간의 제한적인 현실과 삶의 필연성을 깨닫고 이를 수용함으로써 보다 고양된 차원의 영원에 이를 수 있었다. 그는 현실을 배제한 이상의 허구성을 인식하고 이상의 성취방도를 현실에서 구하는 태도를 보였다. Keats는 수용적인 태도로 삶의 모든 면에서 아름다움을 발견하고자 하였고, 구체적인 대상의 아름다움을 감각으로 감지하였다. 그의 시에는 감각심상이 풍요로우며 특히 시각과 촉각심상의 구사력이 탁월하다. 결론적으로 두 시인은 각기 다른 대상의 아름다움을 추구하였으나 기쁨을 전달함으로써 인간의 영혼을 고양시키고 고통을 완화시키고자 하는 인도주의적 의도와 목적을 공유하였다.
