(The) Winter's tale에 나타난 사랑의 문제

Abstract

The Winter's Tale of William Shakespeare didn't interest many critics until recently. It has been criticized by them as a play which was written during the period of his boredom and disillusionment. But new evaluations have been attempted to the extent that it is looked upon as one of Shakespeare's most mature plays, showing his deeper understanding and transcendent viewpoint about life. The Winter's Tale was written near the end of Shakespeare's career after the great tragedies. Here he seems to turn away from the big themes of tragedies as good and evil, life and death to the theme of repentance, forgiveness and restoration. The aim of this thesis is to examine the aspects of dissolution and restoration of love in the play. Leontes' stormy jealousy is, like that of Othello, motiveless. He initiates a period of chaos by denying the bonds of love between himself and his fellows, casting out his own child as a bastard, condemning his chaste wife as an adulteress, and attempting to murder his friend. However, the harmonious world of Leontes which had been fallen into chaos was regenerated and restored. Leontes has a penitentiary period of sixteen long years to have his sin forgiven, and Perdita grows beautiful in Nature. Hermione has fully grown in Leontes' mind until the statue and her image become one. Whether Hermione has been alive or not for sixteen years is a matter of no importance. The importance lies in what kind of inner experience Leontes has had and what he has learned. It is the love of Leontes which restores Hermione's statue into life, and for that his love is even greater.;본 논문은 William Shakespeare의 "last plays"에 속하는 Pericles(1608), Cymbeline(1610), The Winter's Tale(1611), The Tempest(1611) 중, 최근에 이르러 재평가가 시도 되고 있는 The Winter's Tale에 나타난 사랑의 문제를 다루었다. Leontes와 Hermione의 사랑의 파괴와 회복의 양상과, 파괴에 따른 고통을 극복하고 화해와 용서에 이르는 재생의 과정을 통해 Shakespeare의 인생에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 살펴보았다. 인간의 판단력은, 이성의 통제를 받지 않고 분별을 잃을 때 그 결과로 악을 초래한다. Leontes의 근거없는 질투가 야기시킨 파괴력은 비극의 세계에 못지않게 강렬하다. 그러나 그에게는 죽음 아닌 용서와 파멸 아닌 재생의 기회가 주어진다. Leontes가 다시금 스스로 깬 조화를 회복하고 용서와 화해의 세계로 받아들여 지기에는 16년이라는 시간을 필요로 한다. 이 시간은 Leontes로 하여금 진정한 회개와 자각을 통한 영적 성숙을 얻는데 필요한 시간이며, Leontes와 Hermione의 화해의 원동력이 되는 Perdita가 성숙하는데 필요한 시간이다. 본 논문에서는 Leontes가 야기시킨 파괴의 과정과 그 의미, 그리고 회복된 사랑의 신뢰와 함께 용서와 화해를 성취시켜 모두가 승리자가 되는 조화로운 세계와 석상을 살려내는 강한 사랑의 힘을 분석하였다. 대단원에서 성취되는 용서와 화해의 세계는 인생의 절망과 역경을 딛고 선 구원의 세계이며, 죽음까지도 극복한 사랑의 승리에 따른 재생의 세계로서, 보다 풍요롭고 가치있는 삶을 약속하는 세계이다.
