Nathaniel Hawthorne 論

Abstract

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-54) lived in an age of transition that the spirit of first generation of the Puritans relaxed and Unitarianism and Transcendentalism were appeared in America. Then, Hawthorne searched for the truth of human heart with material of his Calvinistic New England ancestors. In the colonial period, Puritanism was not static but changed its character. The most characteristic creation of founders were subtle explorations of sin and regeneration. Hawthorne recognised the stern virtues of the Puritans but he condemned their intolerance and cruelty. Hawthorne's attitude toward the past was critical. As a descendant of Puritan ancestors, Hawthorne felt a deep family guilt. So Hawthorne criticized intolerance and exclusiveness of puritans through works. They had no charity toward sinners and Quakers. Therfore, they were directly opposed to Hawthorne's sense of universal brotherhood. In the view sin. too. Hawthorne's concentration was different from Puritans. According to Hawthorne's theory, original sin was inherent and in most eases, mere passion or human weakness, unpardonable sin was wilful and voluntary. It was common practice to say that such characters as Aylmer, Rappaccini, and Chillingworth committed the unpardonable sin. All of these characters victimized other human beings by the intellect divorced from the heart. The unpardonable sin to Hawthorne was intellectual pride which was separated from heart. Hawthorne identified it with the Puritan distrust of human nature. Hawthorne criticised the puritans who had no charity toward man and limited God's grace, but ironically, Hawthorne himself committed the unpardonable sin that he asserted. And his works was gloomy for treating sin. These was Hawthorne's limitation to his criticizing puritanism. Hawthorne's material was puritanism view of life of his Calvinistic of his New England ancestors, and he treated it with allegory and symbolism as a artist. Hawthorne was more concerned about the results of sin rather than sin itself. Hawthorne은 많은 소재 중에서 유일하게 죄에 관한 것만 작품의 주제로 삼아. 장편소설 뿐 아니라, 단편 소설에서도 죄를 취급했기 때문에, 그의 작품은 어둡다. 또한 인간에 대한 사랑이 없고 하나님의 은혜를 제한한 청교도들을 비판한 Hawthorne 역시, 다른 사람을 '용서 받을 수 없는 자' 라고 정죄함으로써 그가 주장한 '용서 받을 수 없는 죄'를 범하게 된다. Hawthorne 의 '용서 받을 수 없는 죄'를 내세우는 그 태도와 Hawthorne이 청교도들과는 달리 죄에 관한 견해를 피력했지만, Hawthorne 역시 모든 작품에서 죄를 진지하게 취급한 것은 Hawthorne의 청교주의 비판의 한계점이다.
