Hamlet의 희극적 요소와 비극성과의 관계

Abstract

본 논문에서는 William Shakespeare(1564~1616)의 4대 비극 중 Hamlet의 희극적 요소와 비극성과의 관계를 고찰해 보았다. Hamlet은 Shakespeare의 작품 중 가장 위대한 것은 아닐지라도 인기에 있어서는 항상 최고의 위치를 고수할 만큼 가장 매력적인 작품으로 평가되어 왔다. 이 극은 4,000行에 달하는 5막 20장의 방대한 규모와 Shakespeare의 작중 인물 중 가장 많은 대사를 말하는 주인공 때문에도 유명하다. 종래의 비평은 주인공 Hamlet의 성격분석에 편중하여 이 극의 비극성을 전체적인 관점에서 보지 못하는 경향이 농후하였다. 그러나, 이 극의 존재상황인 Elsinore 궁정의 사람들은 그들의 독특한 사고방식과 행동양식으로써 Hamlet의 비극성에 직접, 간접으로 영향을 미치는 중요한 인물들이다. 그들이 이 극의 비극적 상황에 대한 무지로 인해 보여 주는 다양한 희극적 태도는 Hamlet의 비극적 고뇌와 대조되어 나타난다. 한편, 주인공 Hamlet은 다른 비극의 주인공과는 달리 희극의 여주인공들이 주로 지니는 고도의 인식 능력과 비범한 유모 감각이라는 두 가지 측면의 희극적 특징을 지니고 비극적 영웅으로서 성숙해 간다. 이러한 Elsinore사람들의 희극적 태도와 Hamlet의 희극적 특징은 이 극의 비극적 상황과 유기적인 관계를 맺으며 결과적으로 Hamlet의 비극성을 독특한 것으로 부각시키는 역할을 한다. 필자는 Elsinore 사람들과 Hamlet의 희극적 특징이 이 극의 비극적 상황에 미치는 영향을 통해 Hamlet의 비극성을 통합적인 관점에서 살펴 보았다.;The purpose of this paper is to research that relation between comic elements and tragic vision in Hamlet which is one of four Shakespeare's mature tragedies. Although not esteemed the best piece of his work, Hamlet has neverthless been valued as the most fascinating and the most popular. It has also renown for it's exceptionally large scale reaching 4,000 lines with it's title role speaking the longest lines among the characters of Shakespeare's dramas. Until now, most of the critic's perceptions have not achieved in attaining the whole view of the tragic vision in Hamlet, mainly because of their extreme emphasis on the character of Hamlet. But the people of Elsinore Court which is the condition of existence in the Hamlet-world, plays an important role in affecting the tragic vision directly or indirectly through their thoughts or behaviours. Their diverse comic attitude brought on by their ignorance of the tragic circumstance contrasts with the tragic suffering of Hamlet. Hamlet becomes mature as a tragic hero with the two aspects of comic quality, the highest level of awareness frequently possessed by the heroines of comedy and his extraordinary sense of humor almost undiscovered in the other tragic heroes. Thus the comic attitudes of Elsinorean people and the comic quality of Hamlet are related with the tragic condition of this drama and result in emphasizing its tragic vision. I have studied the tragic vision of Hamlet in an integral view through the affection of the comic quality of Elsinorean people and hero Hamlet to its tragic circumstance.
