Abstract
Though it has been generally accepted that the sculptures of the Yi Dynasty are deteriorated more than previous periods, Yi Dyansty has a lot of stoneworks which are various in masonry and forms. Among them, stone animals in the royal tombs are limited in three kinds, sheep, tiger and horse. Because of their relative clarity of completion period, it is worthwhile to study how these stone animals have changed reflecting their own circumstances. This thesis starts off with principles to build a royal tomb and the origin of stone animals which appeared for the first time in the royal tombs of Silla Dynasty. At that time, only lions were posted. Diversified animals were not found until the latter part of Koryo Dynasty. Being different from Chinese royal tomb animals, those of the Yi Dynasty are posted around the tomb. They are directed outside and looked like guardians. Sheep, tigers and horses are included in the Twelve Horary Signs. Sheep is one of the Five Sacrifices with a devil-extermination character. To place a tiger have the purpose of protecting the tombs from wild boasts in the forests. Horse is a representative of sacrifices, with a meaning of a soul carrier. In most cases, the number of each stone animal is four. Two horses place on each side of a tomb's front area with two ministers. Also two sheep and tigers take their places side by side on both sides of the tomb. Here I divide the Yi Dynasty into three periods for convenience sake to see changes in the royal tomb's animals. In brief, each period is characterized as follows. 1st period : excellent masonry, reflecting magnanimous spirit of foundation 2nd period : decayed skills in an unstable social condition by the Japanese Invasion 3rd period : becoming dwarfish and regain its big size later Generally speaking, stone animals in the Yi Dynasty royal tombs lack realism and cubism to some extent. But these sculptures get along with the Korean folk crafts and customs which are common to all artworks in the Yi Dynasty. Notable is the fact that cultural prosperity affected the styles and scales of sculptures. Reversely, unfavorable social conditions made a decadence onto the masonry which we could find in the Seongjong-nung and Mog- nung. In addition masonry inheritance effects could be found in the similarity among a few nearby tombs of different periods.
