Doris Lessing의 The Golden Notebook에 나타난 통합에의 추구

Abstract

Through her works, Doris tossing has tried to accomodate multiple layers of meaning inherent in life and tried to pull down the wall of prejudice and convention that restrict men and incur severance of human relationships. This is the outcome of the author's insight that sees through the inside of superficial order and reflects her ardent wish to reconcile the relationship between society and individual which also appears as a consistent theme in her works. In her early works, tossing exposed false conventions and fictitious myth on the basis of Social Realism and emphasized reformation of social structure. However, disillusioned by communism and faced with diverse symptoms of contemporary society, Lessing started to seek the principle of unification that can surmount all the problems which modern man face and eventually found a solution through a holistic vision of life and human nature. The Golden Notebook is a work in which Lessing's vision has been embodied through subject matter and form. In this thesis, I have tried to analyze The Golden Notebook focusing on the process of Anna Wulf's pursuit for integration. As a writer, Anna's quest is the process of overcoming 'writer's block' originating from the limitations of traditional novel form and from the impossibility of capturing reality. This is illustrated through the structure of the novel. From the individual viewpoint, it is a process of maturing into a integrated self who can harmonize the relationships between order and chaos, society and individual. In this novel, tossing has present 'multiple realities' using the techniques of Metafiction. Through this method, she has not only displayed the complexity of contemporary life in general but also recovered the reasons for existence of the novel form in her own way within the survival of novel controversy. Moreover, through Anna Wulf's process of unification, Lessing has presented a vision of salvation for mankind falling headlong to destruction in disintegration, and chaos. Considering these points, the position that The Golden Notebook occupies not only in the post-war English literature but also in World literature is evaluated as being unshakable.;Doris Lessing은 그의 작품들을 통해 삶에 내재된 다양한 의미의 층을 수용하고자 하였으며, 인간을 제약하고 인간 관계의 단절을 초래하는 편견 및 인습의 벽을 무너뜨리고자 하였다. 이는 피상적인 질서의 이면을 꿰뚫는 작가적 통찰력의 소산이다. 또한 그것은 그의 작품의 일관된 주제로 등장하는 개인과 사회의 갈등을 조화시키려는 열망을 반영하는 것이다. 초기 소설에서 Lessing은 Social Realism에 입각하여 사회와 개인의 문제를 해결하려 하였다. 따라서 사회의 그릇된 인습과 허구적 신화를 폭로하고, 사회구조의 개혁에 비중을 둔다. 그러나 공산주의에 대한 환멸을 경험한 Lessing은 사회구조의 개혁과 더불어 인간의식 자체의 개혁 필요성을 절감하게 되었다. 또한 분열, 혼돈, 상대주의로 규정되는 현대사회의 다양한 징후 앞에서 Lessing은 이 모두를 극복할 수 있는 合의 원리를 추구하게 되며, 삶과 人性에 대한 총체적인 비젼을 통해 그 해답을 발견하였다. The Golden Notebook은 Lessing의 총체적 비젼이 내용과 형식을 통해 형상화된 작품이다. 본고에서 필자는 Anna Wulf의 통합에의 추구과정에 초점을 맞추어 The Golden Notebook을 분석하고자 하였다. Anna의 탐색은 작가로서는, 문학행위에 대한 회의와 reality의 포착 및 표현 불가능성에서 파생된 "writers block"을 극복하는 과정이다. 이는 소설의 구조를 통해 예시되고 있다. 또한 개인적으로는, 삶에 대한 총체적 인식을 통해 혼돈과 질서, 사회와 개인의 관계를 조화시킬 수 있는 통합된 존재로 성숙해 가는 과정이다. Lessing은 작품에서 Metafiction의 기법을 사용하여 'multiple realities'를 표출하였다. 이를 통해 현대 속의 복잡한 삶의 모습을 총체적으로 표현해 내었을 뿐만 아니라, 소설의 사활에 관한 논의 속에서, 나름대로 소설 형식의 존재이유를 회복하였다고 파악된다. 한편 Anna Wulf의 통합의 과정을 통해서는, 분열과 혼돈으로 치닫고 있는 인류를 위해 구원적 비젼을 제시하였다. 이러한 점에서 전후 영문학사뿐만 아니라 세계문학 속에서 The Golden Notebook이 점유하는 위치는 의심의 여지가 없이 확고한 것으로 평가된다.
