Arthur O. Lovejoy의 思想史 硏究

Abstract

Arthur O. Lovejoy의 思想史는 美國 知性史 硏究의 한 맥락을 이룬다. J.A.Robinson이 전통적인 實證主義 史觀에 반발함으로써 美國 知性史의 기틀을 마련하였다면, Lovejoy는 구체적인 硏究 方法을 제시함으로써 知性史의 土台를 굳혔다. 그럼에도 불구하고 Lovejoy의 思想史는 오늘날까지 知性史의 內部에서조차 올바른 평가나 이해를 받아오지 못하였다. 그리하여 종래 우리나라에서도 知性皮 연구에 관한 것은 발표된 바 있으나, Lovejoy의 思想史는 단편적으로만 언급 되었을 뿐 그의 方法論이 구체적으로 연구된 바 없었다. 따라서 本稿에서는 Lovejoy의 思想史의 目的과 方法論을 이해하고자 하였다. 아울러 그가 美國 知性史에 있어서 외면당할 수 밖에 없었던 이유를 밝히고자 하였다. 그리하여 美國 知性史를 보다 명확하게 이해함은 물론이요 美國 史學의 영향을 강하게 받는 國內 史學界의 歷史 연구에 도움이 되고자 하였다. 첫째, Lovejoy의 思想史의 槪念을 파악하기 위하여, 思想史를 知性史 및 哲學史와 比較하였다. 그리고 나서 그의 哲學的 立場을 고찰하였다. 둘째 Lovejoy의 思想史의 方法論을 硏究하였다. 그는 모든 思想은 單位觀念(unit-ideas)이라는 基本的인 要素로 구성되어 있는 混合物이라고 간주하였다. 또한 單位觀念은 連續的으로 혹은 반복하여 나타나는 要素이며, 移動性을 가진다. Lovejoy의 思想史는 이러한 單位觀念의 存在와 屬性에 의존한다. 그리하여 Lovejoy는 우선 論理的·心理的·分析 方法에 의하여 單位觀念을 抽出해낸 다음, 學問 相互間의 연구를 통하여 그 歷史를 추적하였다. 셋째, Lovejoy의 分析的 方法이 效果的으로 적용된 實例를 들고 批判하였다. 그는 歷史上 人間의 思考를 지배해 온 여러 觀念들을 主題로 다루었는데, 그 중에서도 그의 論理的 分析 能力이 가장 잘 나타난 例는 浪漫主義의 意味 分析이다. 또한 Lovejoy는 18세기 浪漫主義의 세가지 觀念이 150년간 생존하여 1930년대에 全體主義的 이데올로기가 성장할 수 있는 精神的 분위기를 조성하였다고 주장하였다. 마지막으로 分析的 方法과 單位觀念의 屬性을 비판함으로써, 浪漫主義의 意味 分析과 Hitlerism의 해석을 검토하였다.;Arthur O. Lovejoy's "history of ideas" approach constitutes an important branch of American intellectual history. While J. A. Robinson laid the foundation of American intellectual history by seriously questioning the traditional positive view of history, Lovejoy consolidated it by introducing a new method of historical study. Nonetheless, Lovejoy's "history of ideas" has seldom been rightly valued and understood. Within both the United States and Korea, scholars of intellectual history often touch upon Lovejoy in their writings without devoting adequate study to his methodology. In this manuscript, 1 have tried to examine the purpose and methodology of Lovejoy's "history of ideas" and to give an explanation as to why Lovejoy has been so widely disregarded and misunderstood by scholars of American intellectual history. By achieve this objective, I intended to analyze American intellectual history, as a discipline, in some detail and at the same time to help Korean historical field which is influenced by American historical study. First, in order to fully grasp the meaning of Lovejoy's "history of ideas," I have compared this concept with intellectual history and the history of philosophy, and then considered it from a general philosophical perspective. Second, I examined the methodology of Lovejoy's "history of ideas." His methodology is premised on the assumption that all thoughts can be considered as mixtures composed of several basic elements called "unit-ideas." "Unit ideas", appearing continuously or repeatedly, are the migratory things. First of all Lovejoy extracted the unit-ideas from the broader clusters through logical and psychological analysis, and then traced theirs history by interdisciplinary study. Third, I selected and criticized some of the practical case to which Lovejoy had applied his analytical method. Lovejoy examined many ideas which had influend on human thought. The most example which verified his logical analytical ability is perhaps his discussion of eighteenth-century European romanticism. He believed that three unit-ideas of eighteenth-century European romanticism survived for 150 years and generated a spiritual atmosphere conducive to the rise of totalitarian ideologies. Finally--and following on from the third point--I have attempted to analyze the meaning of romanticism and trace its influence on Naziism by applying a critique of Lovejoy's analytic method with special emphasis on the concept of unit-ideas.
