Charles Dickens의 사회와 여성

Abstract

Dickens 는 19세기 영국사회의 實像을 통해서, 진정한 인간 가치에 대한 강한 열망으로부터 자기시대의 근본적인 모순에 대한 총체적인 인식에 이른 리얼리즘 작가이다. 그의 소설은 그 이전까지 문학에서 다루기에는 고상하지 않거나 천하다고 생각된 문제를 심각한 예술의 주제로서 다룬 것이다. -돈, 계급, 소송 사건, 공장임금, 학교교육, 빈민구호대책 등 당대 영국민들이 매일 접하던 문제에서 인간과 인간사회의 본질적인 문제를 파악한 것이었다. 그러므로 Dickens 는 영국소설사에서 낭만주의 운동을 결실하고 리얼리즘으로 현대의 문을 연 작가이다. 本 論考의 목적은 Dickens의 중기 이후의 세 작품, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Hard Times를 主로하여 그가 다룬 사회문제와 그 사회 안에서의 인간존재양식에 대한 그의 태도의 변화발전을 살펴보고, 그가 그린 여성인물의 특징과 한계점을 고찰하는데 있다. David Copperfield에서는 인간존재양식을 개인적 고아로 보지만, Bleak House 에서는 사회속의 고아, Hard Times 에서는 정신적, 감정적 고아로 심각해진다. 또 David Copperfield 에서는 기존의 질서인 계급문제에 중점을 두었지만, Bleak House에서는 사회문제인 영국의 법제도를 통해 부패한 사회제도 밑에서는 이익을 누린다고 생각하는 계층을 포함하여 결국 아무도 살아 남을 수 없음이 제시되고 있다. Hard Times에서는 공리주의를 통해 인간의 본성을 무시한 主義의 강요가 가져오는 인간의 정신적, 도덕적 타락을 보여주고, 잘못된 主義를 공격하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 시대의 모순을 잘 파악했던 Dickens는 안이한 여성관으로 당시의 여성상인 Domestic Angel 로 여성인물을 그림으로써 그의 작품의 약점이 되었다. 이러한 약점과 더불어 Dickens 는 뚜렷한 사회적 비젼을 제시하지 못했다는 비판을 받고 있다. 그것은 사실이다. 그러나, 그의 소설의 史的 의미는 자신이 공격한 것들에 대한 또 다른 대안을 제시하는 것에 있는 것이 아니라, 그 문제자체의 근본적인 이해에 의해 파악된 본질적인 문제를 소설이라는 藝術作品으로 형상화한데 있다고 본다.;Charles Dickens is a novelist of realism who, through the perception of the real aspects of the English society of 19th century, got to the recognition of fundamental contradictions of his time from the strong desire for the genuine value of human being. He took as the themes of his novels the problems, such as of money, class, Lawsuit, wage, and relief of the poor, which had been still regarded as too humble and mean to be the theme of literature, but were of great concern for the English people in those days, and from which he understood the substantial problems of human being and human society. From this sense Dickens can be said the novelist who completed the movement of romanticism and opened the way to realism in the histroy of English Literature. In this study I intend to clarify Dickens' consciousness of the social problem, change and development of his attitudes toward the type of human existence in its society and find the characteristics and Limit of women characters in his novels. The type of human existence is described as the natural orphan in David Copperfield, the social orphan in Bleak House, and the mental orphan in Hard Times. In David Copperfileld class problems as establishment are emphasised but in Bleak House the fact is revealed through the English Legal system that under the corrupt social systems no one can be survived, including the persons of the class who take advantage of them. In Hard Times Dickens criticized the illguided ideology, showing through Utilitarianism, the mental and moral corruption of human being which resulted from the forced ideology without consideration of human nature. Even though he made a good perception of the problems of his lime, Dickens, due to his idle view of woman, described all his women characters only as Domestic Angels, which resulted in a weak point of his novels. In addition to that default, he is criticized for the reason that he did not present the clear vision of society. But I think that the historical meaning of his novels lies not in the presentation of the alternatives for what he made a charge against, but in the visualization through novel, a work of art, of the substantial problems perceived with the the fundamental understanding of the problems.
