Abstract
In United Silla, though the construction of temple buildings according to the principle of the one-pagoda arrangement was frequently seen, the two-pagoda arrangement was overwhelmingly popular. A representative specimen of the type could be found in the three-storied stone pagoda at Paek Jang-am of Sil sang-sa in Namwon, North Cholla Province. All the surface of the pagoda, not to mention the main body or the roof, is decorated with carvings of figures of Bodhisattva, Four Deva Kings, the Buddhas of triad, the celestial beings who are offering or playing musical instruments and lotus. These naturally Lead us to conjecture that after the middle of the 9th century, in which this pagoda is believed to have been erected.
