Abstract

This thesis attempts to study the present situations and problems of Korean librarianship in a hope to bring out the suggestions for the possible improvements in Korean librarianship. The form of school education is gradually directed toward the independent teaching method and the continuing education of people is becoming important in the present society. So effective library services are in need more than ever before and consequently library functions become diverse. Library science was introduced in Korea when the department of library science in the Yonsei University was established in 1957. Since then it has been established as an independent department at the undergraduate level in such universities as Ewha Women's University (1959), Chung-Ang University (1963), Sung Kyun Kwan University (1964). The ten years period has seen a number of qualified librarians produced from these institutions. In the view of its short life span, Korean librarian- ship has been much improved. But there are many points to be further improved; betterments of the Library Acts, appropriate Library policy of the Government, in-training of librarians, shortage of librarians with adequate academic background, appropriate personnel management, and enlargement of library services.
