Robert Herrick의 Hesperides연구

Abstract

Robert Herrick (1591-1674), a member of "tribe of Ben", is a man who worshipped the traditional English way of life. His poems show us the conventional festivals and various ceremonies of the 17th century. And this poems are characterized by the various phenomena of the 17th century English literature. Although he is a disciple of Jonson, it seems difficult to find from Herrick the intellectual wit and character of neoclassicism. Herrick is sensitive and intuitive rather than intellectual. The purpose of this thesis is to study R. Herrick through the ananlysis of his pastoral poems contained in Hesperides. Before the analysis of his pastoral poems the influence of Jonson on Herrick as well as the differences between the two are surveyed. Through the analysis of the pastoral poems the writer comes to know as follows: First, he chooses the country life of Dean Prior as his materials: festivals, ceremonies and folk-lores. And he writes his poems from the standpoint of a pastoral poet. In the festival poems, Herrick exhibits his enthusiasm for traditional way of life tinctured with paganism. Moreover, in his ceremonial poems, we can see that he, as an Anglican priest, regards the rite as greatly important by means of rebirth and sanctification. Second, Herrick's attitude toward nature is very realistic and esthetic without any moral sense. According as his attitude toward the country life changes gradually, the form of his pastoral poems shift from artificial to realistic one. Third, Herrick's character is very different from Jonson: Herrick is vested with versatility, rich imagination, esthetic sense and pagan spirit. Fourth, the contradictional aspect of the 17th century appears to Herrick more strongly than to any other contemporary poet. Fifth, his personality as a miniaturist is shown in his pastoral poems. Sixth, his pastoral poems are influenced by the idea of "carpe-diem" as well as by Renaissance humanists and Horace. From the study above the writer comes to conclusion that although Herrick imitates Jonson, Herrick must be given the peculiar evaluation rather than the label of a student of Jonson in the respect that Herrick depicts the pastoral custom of England with rich imagination and esthetic sense and he regards writing as a rite.;Robert Herrick(1591-1674)은 낭만주의 시대를 제외하고는 제대로 평가받지 못 하였고 단지 Jonson의 아류로만 인식되어 왔으나 그에게는 Jonson의 신고전주의와는 다른 면이 보인다. Robert Herrick은 영국 시인 중에서도 가장 구습을 사랑할 수 있었던 인물이었으며, Dean Prior라는 시골에서 그의 생의 대부분을 체험적으로 보낸 진정한 의미의 전원 시인이었다. 본 논문에서는 Herrick의 전원시만을 분석하여 "tribe of Ben"의 한 사람이지만 Jonson과는 다른 경향을 보이는 Herrick을 연구하고자 하였다. Herrick을 이해하려면 우선 Jonson과의 관계를 알아야 하므로 Ⅱ장에서는 Jonson이 어떤 식으로 Herrick에게 영향을 끼쳤는지 또 두 작가의 차이점은 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. Ⅲ장에서는 Ⅱ장에서 분석한 소재와 전원을 대하는 시인의 태도의 차이점이라는 관점에서 Herrick의 전원시를 고찰하였다. Herrick의 전원시는 그가 Dean Prior의 교구 목사가 된 1629년을 전후로 그 형태와 소재가 인위적인 것에서 사실적인 것으로 바뀌고 있다. 그의 전원시의 주요 소재는 로마와 기독교의 의식이 혼합된 Devonshire의 전통적 축제와 민화 등으로 이런 시 속에는 민속을 즐기는 실미적인 태도와 죽음을 필연적으로 받아들이고 생을 향락하려는 "carpediem"의 사고가 반영되고 있으며 이와 아울러 제식을 재생과 신성화의 수단으로 보는 영국 국교회 목사로서의 태도가 잘 반영되고있다. 이상과 같은 고찰을 통하여 Herrick은 시형과 문체에 있어서는 Jonson을 모방했고, 사상에 있어서는 왕당파 시인의 일반적 특성을 표방하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 그의 낭만적 기질과 전통적 민속에 대한 애착, 시(詩)를 제식으로 보는 점 등은 매우 독특한 것으로서 현대인에게 결핍되어 있는 환상과 축제 그리고 민속의 세계를 풍부히 갖고 있는 점으로 그에 대한 문학상의 평가는 재고되어질 필요가 있다.
