Saint Joan에 나타난 개인과 사회의 갈등

Abstract

George Bernard Shaw는 빅토리아 시대 말기의 사회적 모순을 민감하게 인식한 작가로서, 자신의 문학 작품을 통하여 사회 개혁의, message를 전달하고자 노력하였다. Shaw의 작품을 일관하는 주제는 개인과 사회와의 관계라 할 수 있다. 초기 작품에서는 교육을 통해서 사회 개조가 가능하다는 낙관적인 견해가 나타난 반면, 후기 작품에서는 점차 사회 개조에 대한 신념이 희박해지며, 외부적인 개혁보다는 인간 심성의 내면적인 변화를 추구하게 된다. Shaw에게 있어 사회는 점차 개인이 개조할 수 있는 대상이 아니라, 개인을 좌절시키는 세력으로 부각된다. 따라서 작가는 凡人의 능력과 속성을 초월하는 超人間적인 힘을 지닌 개인의 출현을 모색하게 된다. Shaw의 후기 작품을 대표하는 Saint Joan에서는 개인의 자유의지를 주장하려는 Joan과 고정된 가치 체계를 수호하려는 정치, 종교 세력과의 갈등이 잘 나타나 있다. 본 논문에서는 이 작품을 통해 개인과 사회의 갈등을 작가의 진보관의 변화라는 관점에서 고찰하였다. Shaw는 Saint Joan에서 "Creative Evolution"을 수행하는 개인과 현상 체계를 유지하려는 사회의 갈등을 그리고 있다. 필자는 이 갈등을 진보와 보수 세력의 갈등이라는 역사적 차원과, 종교의 자유를 추구하는 개인과 그 개인을 수용하지 못하는 기존 사회의 갈등이라는 측면에서 분석하였다. Joan이 존중하는 개인의 의지는 Shaw가 말하는 "진보에의 욕구(evolutionary appetite)"와 동일시되며, 이는 "추상적인 법률 (abstract law)"을 고수하는 사회와 대립한다. 사회는 그들보다 정신적으로 우월한 초인간적인 개인을 수용하지 못함으로써 인류 진보의 기회를 상실한다. Shaw는 Joan을 추방한 15세기 사회의 어리석음이 현대에도 계속될 가능성을 암시한다. 그에 의하면, 사회는 그 구성원 모두가 초인간적인 속성을 지니게 되기까지는 초인간을 받아들일 수 없기 때문이다. 결국 Saint Joan에서 Shaw는 인류의 진보를 위해 헌신하는 개인의 의지와 능력을 찬양하면서, 동시에 그러한 개인을 좌절시키는 사회를 비판하고 있다.;Being sensitive to the social evils of his age, George Bernard Shaw tried to transmit his message of social reformation through his works. The theme which is consistent all through his plays is the relationship between individual and society. While Shaw was seen rather optimistic of the social progress through amelioration in his earlier works, his later works revealed that his concern for and faith in the social progress diminished, whereas he put more emphasis on the individual problems. As he came to recognize society as a frustrating force against individual, he sought after "Superman." In this thesis, I have investigated the conflict between individual and society from the perspective of Shaw's change of progressivism through Saint Joan. Shaw dramatized the conflict of individual and society: individual who tries to perform the "Creative Evolution" and society that insists on the status quo. I have analyzed this conflict from two sides. One is the historical conflict between radicalism and conservatism, the other is the conflict between an individual who pursues the "Life Force" and the society which can not accept the individual. The living will of Joan. identified with the "evolutionary appetite", struggles with the society which adheres to the abstract law. Because it did not accept the mentally superior individual, society lost the opportunity for progress. In Saint Joan Shaw also suggested that modern society still repeat to commit the same folly of the 15th century society by isolating itself from its savior. According to Shaw, society can not receive "Superman" until all of its members become Superman. Shaw celebrated Joan's will and ability as a "Superman", at the same time criticizing the society which frustrated the individual in Saint Joan.
