Abstract

Bellow는 20C 現代社會속에서 人間의 삶이 어떻게 定義될 수 있는가에 대해 깊은 관심을 가지고 있었다. 20C 모더니즘 작가들은 終末論的 歷史觀을 수용하여 人間의 앞날에는 絶望뿐이라고 悲觀하고 있다. 그러나 Bellow는 人間本 質的인 價値에 대한 굳은 믿음을 가지고, 人間과 그의 삶이 다분히 상처받았지만 아직 回復할 수 있는 가능성이 있다고 보았다. Bellow의 그러한 肯定性은 Seize the Day에서 분명히 드러나고 있다. 병든 인류의 대표자로 제시된 주인공 Tommy는, 非人間化를 강요하는 現代狀況속에서 苛酷한 댓가를 요하는 自己救援의 과정을 끝내 勘當해내고 있다. Tommy의 高貴한 鬪爭과 救援은, 모든 人間에게 어떤 可能性을 제시하고 있다고 생각된다. 한편 Bellow는 자신의 肯定性이 수월하거나 漠然한 樂觀이 아님을 밝히기 위해, 人間的 價値를 이해할 능력도 喪失하고, 絶對的이기까지 한 現代社會의 모습을 철저히 드러내고 있다. Seiz the Day에서 社會의 모범생이자 成功者인 Dr. Adler가 人間으로서는 얼마나 非人間化되었는가를 보여줌으로써, 20C 美國社會의 矛盾的 價値體階를 제시하고 있다. 그것은 人間의 矮小化와 自我喪失이 당연시 되어 가는 이 社會속에서, 人間답게 살기를 고집하며, 자신의 眞正한 自我를 발견하고자 하는 Tommy의 鬪爭이, 그만큼 어렵고도 價値있는 것임을 증명하고 있다. Bellow는 人間의 삶이 悲觀的이라고 固定시켜버리는 이 시대의 지배적인 풍조에 妥協하기를 拒否하고, 자신의 눈으로 보고, 스스로 생각한 결과, 삶을 肯定해야만 한다는 결심에 이르렀다. 人間과 그의 삶은 이 시대의 어떠한 판단이나 理論에도 불구하고, 그 자체로서 價値가 있는 것이며, 또한 神秘한 것이다. 그러므로 Bellow는 어떤 작가가 그러한 人間과 삶을 모두 알고있다는 듯이 確信한다는 것은 옳지 못하다고 본 것이다. 이러한 Bellow의 겸손한 태도는 人間에 대한 믿음과 生에 대한 경외심을 중시하는 猶太的 背景에서 온 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이 猶太的 價値들은 Bellow의 肯定性과 humanistic한 世界觀을 구성하는 중요한 요소가 되고 있다. Bellow는 그의 소설을 통해서, 現代社會의 巨大한 非人間化 압력에 무기력해지고 있는 人間에게, 각자가 潛在하고 있는 人間性의 價値를 발견함으로써 삶의 救援이 가능할 것이라는 希望을 제시해주고 있다.;Bellow was very interested in how man's life could be defined in the modern twentieth century society. Accepting the apocalyptic view of history, the twentieth century modernistic writers tend to be pessimistic about the future of man. But Bellow, with a firm confidence in the essential human values, thought that man and his life were much damaged but it is yet possible for recovery. In Seize the Day, such a sense of affirmation of Bellow's is clearly revealed. Tommy, as a representative of sick humanity, tenaciously undergoes the process of self-deliverance which needs a harsh price. In the dehumanizing power of the modern situation, Tommy's rare struggle and his self-deliverance suggest some possibility to all men. On the other hand to present that his affirmation is not an easy or vague optimism, Bellow emphasizes the realities of modern society that not only has lost the capacity to comprehend but is also inimical to human values. In Seize the Day, by revealing the dehumanization of Dr. Adler who is a model and a succes in this society, he suggests the contradictory system of values of the twentieth century American society. It proves that Tommy's struggle to discover his real self, with his obstinacy to lead a human life in this society in which the loss of self and the drarfishness of man are natural, is so much difficult and yet valuable. Bellow refused to compromise with the prevailing attitude which fixes the human life as a pessimistic one. He saw with his own eyes and thought for himself, and reached a resolution to affirm a life. Man and his life are in themselves valuable and mysterious despite any judgement or theories in this century. Therefore, Bellow thought that a writer's confirmation of knowing all about man and his life is not true. This humble attitude of Bellow came from his Jewish background which accounts much of the confidence in man and the reverence for life. These Jewish values are the important factor which constitute Bellow's sense of affirmation and his humanistic view of the world. Bellow, through his novels, presents a hope to man who is emasculated by a great dehumanizing pressure of modern society, and that the deliverance of human life is possible by the discovery of each man's latent human values.
