John Barth의 신화를 통한 문학적 재생에의 추구

Abstract

John Barth는 현대문학을 The Literature of Exhaustion으로 정의한다. 이것은 현대작가의 딜레마와 그 해결방안을 모두 설명하는 개념이다. Barth는 현대 작가가 직면한 난국을 문학적 형식의 "소모"로 보고 이러한 난국 자체를 작품화하는 것이 독창적이고 새로운 문학형식의 출현을 가능하게 한다고 보았다. 이를 위하여 Barth는 그의 작품 속에서 신화를 재서술한다. 신화는 창조, 죽음, 재생 등 인간의 근본문제를 담고 있으므로 소설형식의 고갈과 재생을 의미하는 Literature of Exhaustion을 설명하는 적절한 자료가 된다. 신화의 재서술에 있어서 Barth는 단순한 반복이나 모방을 피하고 효과적 수용과 새로운 기법을 통하여 현대적인 작품을 만들어낸다. Barth의 Chimera는 Literature of Exhaustion의 구체적 본보기이다. 본고의 목적은 Barth가 Chimera에서 신화를 재서술함으로써 작가적 딜레마를 극복하고 문학적 재생을 추구하는 과정을 분석하고자 하는 것이다. 세 novella에서 주인공들이 시도하는 개인적 재생에의 추구는 Barth 자신의 문학적 재생에의 추구를 상징한다. 그들이 이야기꾼으로서 직면하는 "publish or perish" 문제에 대한 해결책은 그 문제 자체에 관하여 서술하는 것이고, 그 서술과정인 "the key to the treasure"는 결과적으로 "the treasure" 자체가 되어 독창적인 문학작품이 창출된다. Barth는 metafiction의 기법을 사용하여 작품의 형식 자체가 주제가 되도록 하였다. 그러나 가는 작품의 형식적 측면에만 집착하지 않고 Tragic View의 주제를 통하여 "현실보다 진실된" fiction으로 승화시킨다. 그가 이루는 문학적 재생은 소설의 죽음에 관한 논쟁에 대항하여 소설의 소멸불가능성을 확인하였다는 점에서 의미있는 것이다. 소설이란 인간 역사와 함께 끊임없이 변화하는 이해 행위이므로 John Barth와 Chimera는 시대적 특성의 측면에서 평가해볼 때 현대문학사에서의 그 위에서 더욱 빛난다고 할 것이다.;John Barth's definition of contemporary literature as the Literature of Exhaustion involves both the dilemma and the solution for the contemporary writer. Barth sees the writer's dilemma as the "used-upness" of certain literary form and claims that the writer may paradoxically turn such "ultimacies" into materials and means for creating a new and original work of art. In some of his works, Barth rewrites myths. Since myths are about creation, death, rebirth and all basic human experiences, they are appropriate sources for the Literature of Exhaustion. In rewriting myths, Barth does not merely imitate them but effectively uses them through innovative techniques to create works of contemporary sensibility. Barth's Chimera(1972) is a fine example of the Literature of Exhaustion. This thesis will examine Barth's quest for literary renewal through myth. In each of the three novellas, the hero's quest for literal rebirth parallels Barth's own quest for renewal. As storytellers, they all face the problem of "publish or perish." The solution to this crisis is to narrate the problem itself, which process becomes "the key to the treasure." This "key to the treasure" in turn becomes "the treasure" itself, an original work of literature. Barth employs metafictional techniques in order to make the form itself become the content. But form for Barth is always a metaphor for other concerns, never an end in itself. In Chimera, Barth has created a fiction "truer than fact" which transcends the mere sum of experimental forms and techniques. His artistic renewal is significant in that he has proven the in exhaustibility of fiction against the "death of the novel controversy." The novel is basically an ever-changing act of apprehension that belongs in the world of our changing history. Postmodernism has had the deepest implications for the novel internationally, because it has questioned the act of imaginative writing at its heart. From this point of view, Barth has been and continues to be one of the great contributors of contemporary American fiction.
