Abstract

Shakespeare의 비극작품인 Coriolanus(1607-08)는 Caius Martius Coriolanus라는 한 로마 용사의 비극적인 삶과 몰락과정을 극화한 것이다. 본 논문은 Coriolanus에 나타난 주인공의 성격묘사의 특성을 고찰한 것으로, 이에 나타난 비극성을 규명해 보고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 전쟁영웅의 묘사에서 다양한 imagery와 독특한 극적기교를 사용한 작가의 의도를 살펴본다. Shakespeare가 비극적 인물로 다룬 Coriolanus에 대한 객관적인 이해가 본 논문의 궁극적인 취지이다. 이 작품에서 역사적 인물 Coriolanus의 일생은 로마로부터의 추방과 그에 대항한 Coriolanus의 복수전을 중심으로 다루어진다. 이 두 사건들은 개인과 사회와의 갈등이란 맥락 하에 상호파괴적인 양상으로 전개되어간다. Imagery를 통한 주인공 묘사는 전쟁영웅인 Coriolanus의 삶을 독특한 양상으로 극화하고 있다. 무사적 가치(virtus)를 추구하는 Coriolanus는 전쟁도구의 이미지로 묘사된다. 기계(machine)에 관한 비유는 용감무쌍한 기상과 초인간적인 힘으로 결합된 Coriolanus의 무사적 기량을 극단적으로 부각시킨다. 작가는 전쟁기계뿐 아니라 신과 같은 초월적 존재에 대한 비유를 융합시켜서 주인공이 사회환경과 괴리됨을 나타낸다. 여기에 동물에 관한 비유까지 동원되어 Coriolanus는 비인격적인 존재로 묘사된다. 이와 같은 비유를 통해서 작가는 주인공이 필연적으로 사회로부터 소외되어 파멸할 수밖에 없음을 부각시킨다. 신, 기계, 동물에 관한 imagery를 사용한 주인공 묘사는 Shakespeare의 극작품들 가운데 하나의 보기 드문 일례가 되고 있다. 본 논문은 로마의 위대한 전쟁영웅으로서 극 속에 구현된 Coriolanus와, 비극적 인물로서 극작가에 의해 비추어진 인간 Coriolanus라는 두 가지 측면에서 주인공 묘사의 특성을 살펴본 것이다. 제1장에서는 "A Dull Actor"라는 부제하에 현실의 패배자로서 Coriolanus의 극화된 삶을 살펴본다. "monster"로 집약되는 주인공의 이미지가 강화되는 과정을 추적하면서, Coriolanus가 스스로 명예를 짓밟고 결국 현실세계로부터 도태 당하게 된 그의 성격적 요인을 규명해본다. "Theatrum Mundi"라는 인생에 대한 하나의 극적 인식을 바탕으로, 전쟁영웅 Coriolanus는 현실적인 패배자로 그려진다. 그는 복잡하고 다양한 사회현실 속에서 적응하지 못하고, 로마의 역사라는 무대에서 반역자이자 변절자라는 불명예속에서 퇴장하게된 "한 어리석은 배우(a dull actor)"로 나타나게 된다. 제2장에서는 비극적 인물로 묘사된 Coriolanus의 성격 속에서 극작가인 Shakespeare에게 포착된 그의 인간적인 위대함을 살펴본다. 앞서 제1장에서 현실적 패배의 원인으로 규명된 성격적 특성을 비극의 영웅다운 면모로서 재 고찰해본다. 비극의 영웅으로서 Coriolanus는 탐욕과 이기주의, 이를 가장하기 위한 위선이 만연한 현실에 천성적으로 부응할 수 없는 "지나치게 고귀한(too noble for the world)" 품성의 소유자로 부각된다. 이를 위해서 작가는 주인공 묘사에서 공화정 초기 로마의 정치적 상황을 밀착시키고 있다. 로마로 향한 주인공의 복수심은 저급한 인간현실을 응징하려는 그의 적극적 의지의 표현으로 승화된다. 그것은 정의(fair justice)를 회복하기위한 또 하나의 세계 "a world elsewhere"로의 추구로 다루어진다. 작가는 극중 인물 Virgilia와 무대언어로서 silence를 기교적으로 결합시켜서 주인공의 행위 속에 있는 그 정당성을 표출시킨다. 비극적 인물로서 Coriolanus의 pride는 그에게 명예(honour)를 가져다주는 동시에, 현실 속에서 그가 실추하게 되는 결함(taints)중 가장 치명적인 것이 된다. 본 논문은 pride에 대한 양면적인 해석을 기저로 비극적 인물로 묘사된 전쟁영웅 Coriolanus를 살펴본 것이다. 작가의 예리한 통찰력과 극적 상상력을 통해서 투사된 Coriolanus 자신의 정당성을 규명해보고자 하는 것이 제2장의 의도이자 본 논문의 기본 의도가 된다. Coriolanus의 주인공 묘사에서 사용된 극적 기교는 웅장하고 화려한 어휘로 가득 찬 Shakespeare의 다른 비극작품들만큼이나 독자와 관객들의 민감한 감수성을 요구하고 있다. 이것이 곧 Coriolanus에서만 느끼게 되는 특유의 비극적 정취가 될 것이다.;Coriolanus, Shakespeare's last tragedy, centers on the fall of a great Roman warrior Caius Martius Coriolanus. His life is dramatized in dealing with the banishment from Rome and his vengeful war against Rome. In this thesis, my concern is to examine the peculiar concept of human character in relation to dramatic action. This thesis is a sort of research to find out a tragic content in the characterization of the hero. It aims at proper understanding of Coriolanus as a Shakespearean tragic hero. Above all, it is a most unique feature of Coriolanus that the dramatic action conveys the image of the hero as a war-machine, a beast or a god. The characterization of the hero, on the whole, is based on the description of this outer behaviour rather than his inner conflict. The imageries of machine, animal, and god imply that Coriolanus devoted himself to the warror-ethic, virtus. They represent the hero's enormous physical power and uncompromising valour. The two main events-the vanishment and the vengeful war-are unfold in view of the conflict between an individual and society. Proceedingly the imageries are reinforced, which signifies the destructive mode of conflict. The necessity of the hero's fall is brought into light by way of the imageries. The distinctive use of imageries in Coriolanus sets up the characterizing its hero as "a rare example." This thesis consists in two chapters which are to point out the peculiarity in the characterization of the tragic hero. The first chapter entitled "A Dull Actor", deals with the life of Coriolanus as a failure. In company with the interpretation of the various imageries, it tends to investigate the innate causes of the war-hero's fall. Coriolanus turns out to be "a dull actor" who cannot adjust himself to the complex World-Stage. The second chapter explores the tragic content in the characterization of the hero, namely, what makes Coriolanus a Shakespearean tragic hero. In fact, this chapter is a reinterpretation of the innate causes of his failure. It is connected with the consideration of the highly political background of early Republican Rome in this play, The outrageous, threatening attitude of the hero is transformed into a formidable, heroic one against the grubby, or unsatisfactory reality. Moreover, the idea of 'a world elsewhere' transfigures his vengeful action against Rome into a search for an idealistic world. The dramatic techniques-the use of silence as a dramatic language and the characterization of the hero's wife Virgilia illuminate the righteousness of the hero's behaviour. The characterization of the hero in Coriolanus is a remarkable study of pride. Coriolanus's pride carries "honour" as well as "taints" just as other tragic heroes. On the other hand, his pride holds out through his unperishable valour and enormous physical power, which makes Coriolanus stand out among Shakespearean heroes. This thesis takes its basis on the ambivalent interpretation of Coriolanus's pride and his wrath. The understanding of the hero in Coriolanus requires the audience's sensibility no less than those of Skakespeare's tragedies. Coriolanus has, to quote A. C. Bradley, "a special tone or atmosphere of its own" by virtue of the "monstrous" imageries and distinctive stagecrafts in the characterization of the hero.
