Shakespeare의 Antony and Cleopatra에 나타난 양면성에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 William Shakespeare의 Antony and Cleopatra에 나타난 양면성을 탐색하고 그것이 내포하고 있는 궁극적인 의미를 검토한 것이다. 양면적인 양상은 두 주인공의 성격과 사랑에서 발견된다. Antony와 Cleopatra는 비극의 주인공으로서의 위대한 면모 뿐 아니라 무수한 결점을 공유한 인물이며, 그들의 사랑은 자신들에게는 현실이지만 객관적인 관점에서는 주변 사회로부터 유리된 꿈이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 양면성은 단순히 혼란에 그치는 것이 아니며, 상반되는 양면은 하나의 통일체를 구성하고 작가의 진정한 의도를 구체화하기 위해 상호 보충적인 역할을 한다. 두 인물의 성격의 양면은 지속적으로 교차됨으로써 인간 성격의 풍부함과 다변성을 나타낸다. 또 상호 불가분의 관계에 있는 양면은 선과 약이라는 고정적인 도덕적 구분을 적용할 수 없는 것이 된다. Shakespeare는 이전의 비극 작품에서 인간의 결점을 악덕으로 제시하였으나 Antony and Cleopatra에서는 비판적인 태도에서 탈피하여 결점을 성격의 일부로 수용한다. 작자는 인간의 결점을 사실적으로 드러내면서도 도덕성에 구속되지 않는 있는 그대로의 인간 본성을 긍정하였다고 볼 수 있다. Antony와 Cleopatra의 사랑은 사회로부터의 고립과 정치적인 패배 및 죽음을 초래한다. 그러나 로마 사회는 개인의 인격을 정치적인 권력 추구에 희생시키는, 죽음이나 폐허와 같은 곳이다. 이와는 대조적으로 두 인물의 사랑은 생명력에 충만하고 자기실현을 가능케 하는 인간적인 자유를 지니고 있다. 그리고, Cleopatra의 죽음은 그녀의 위대한 詩的 상상과 더불어 역설적으로 두 연인이 영원한 삶을 성취하게 한다. Shakespeare는 두 주인공의 사랑이 사회 속에서 허용되거나 실현되지 못하고 있다는 점에서 개인의 가치가 절대적인 것은 아니라는 점을 제시하면서도, 사랑의 고귀함을 주장한 것이다. 궁극적으로 이 극의 양면성은 일종의 휴우머니즘을 표출하는 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 그리고 그것은 사실주의를 배제하지 않는다는 점에서 확고하고 타당성이 있는 것이며, 또한 Shakespeare의 포괄적이고 성숙한 삶의 통찰력을 반영하는 것이라고 하겠다.;In this thesis I have traced the ambiguities which are manifested in Antony and Cleopatra in terms of character and love theme, and have examined their meanings. As the tragic heroes, Antony and Cleopatra are equally matched in their greatnesses and faults. And their love takes on a supreme reality to themselves, but it is a dream in the objective perspective. But these ambiguities are not confusions. The contradictory extremities complement each other to embody the author's true intention. The greatness and fault which alternate with each other represent the richness and variety of character. And since they are inseperable, it is recognized that they are not the moral distinctions of vice and virtue. Shakespeare presents human fault as vice in his early tragedies. But he breaks from that critical attitude in this play and admits human faults and weakness as a part of personality. Though he reveals them realistically, Shakespeare affirms human nature as it is, not restricted by the morality. The love of the protagonists results in their isolation from the society, their political failure and death. But their love is filled with vitality and it has human freedom for self-fulfillment, while the Roman society sacrifices man's personality under the political power. Moreover, the death of Cleopatra, with her great poetic imagination makes the lovers accomplish an eternal life. Shakespeare prizes the nobleness of love, simultaneously asserting that the individual value is not absolute because their love can not be accepted nor fulfilled in the society. I concluded that the ambiguities of the main characters ultimately expresses a kind of humanism and it is firm and valid one without excluding the realism. In addition it also represent the author's inclusive and mature vision of life.
